This has been discussed in several other threads. In summary, yes it works but will it screw up some part of your fuel system, possibly. Some people have used it just for long trips or every few thousand miles to clean things out. All in all in depends on how much you want to gamble with your truck to save some dough.

I don't buy it. Any oil company that wanted to capture the market could just add acetone to it's gas and claim their fuel makes more power or increases your mileage. I'd have to see more than anecdotal evidence that it's doing anything (controlled tests, before and after dyno charts, etc). Sounds like a good show for Mythbusters.

You think an oil company would add something to their gas to increase mileage? Better mileage = less gas consumed = less profits = not going to happen, EVER!

If it really boosts performance? Yes I do. Gas is pretty much a commodity so any edge you could gain over the competition would immediately be realized. There are plenty of small oil companies who would like to boost their sales. If simply adding a little acetone to their gas would give them a huge competitive edge, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

Plus, you could always sell it under a different name (aka super premium) and charge extra. Take your regular gas, add acetone, call it super premium and charge an extra $0.50 per gallon. Same gas, more money.

It might if it were pure acetone, but the levels they are talking about are pretty low and is dilluted in the gasoline (3 oz for every 10 gallons which is less than 2%).

Pouring in pure acetone can be a problem if you spill it on your truck's paint though.

I didn't say anything about performance. I was talking about mileage, and so were you in your previous post. I agree with you about the performance side of it, but when it comes to mileage oil companies don't give a f**k. Oil companies don't market mileage boosting products...that's like slitting their own throats.

I was talking about mileage performance.

    http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/classic_car_commercials_petroleum_04.htm

You don't think a commercial like this today would sell extra gasoline for a particular company if it really worked? They would suck all kinds of customers from the competition. Wouldn't a country like Venezuela like more oil dependency from the US? It would give the dictator a larger voice in the US if his gas gave us 30% better mileage. Why would someone like that care about other global oil companies? The commercial benefit would be large and would take a long time to undo. It couldn't be easily dismissed by those who "knew" about acetone but didn't add it to their gasoline (If you knew, why didn't you do it?).

Man are you kidding me? That commercial is from '63. Have you seen any commercials like that in the past 10 years? I can't remember ever seeing a gas commercial that tried to sell mileage. I've seen plenty that try to sell performance - as in HP gains etc. As for American's supporting a company from Venezuela or a dictator for that matter - never! Ya the oil and gas may come from Venezuela, but it's an American company the drills for it.

Citgo is a subsidiary of Venezuala's "STATE-OWNED" oil company.
    http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/2006-01-11-citgo-cover-usat_x.htm

Let's not be absurd. I'm not suggesting the 1963 commercial would do anything for sales now. The point about the comercial is oil companies have pushed their gas as better mileage products in the past. It would boost a company's sales now. Hell, you're talking about adding a solvent to your engine based on some internet site, you can't tell me a commercial by a major oil company wouldn't boost their sales considerably.

Look, I can't convince you. I mentioned that it was busted on Mythbusters and that fuel mileage boosters were discredited by the FTC (unless you think they're shills for the oil companies). I think it's bogus and I haven't seen anything but anecdotal evidence that it's doing anything (it's probably cleaning their clogged fuel injectors). I've also read about it harming some people's vehicle (burned up their injectors). So go ahead and put it in your truck. I could give a hoot.

I totally agree with you that a commercial by a major oil company would boost their sales, but all I am saying is they don't make commercials about gas mileage, or at least none that I have seen.

I was never planning on putting it in my truck...just wondering if it actually works.

If anyone is going try it in anything, try it in a gas-powered generator. The engine speed is constant so there's not any variability due to driver influence or road conditions. Measure the time it takes the generator to run out of gas. Do a couple of runs as a control with plain gasoline to measure how long it takes the generator to run out. You'll want a couple of samples of each to average it out due to slight differences in the amount of gas loaded. Then, run a couple of acetone loads through it to see if there is any benefit (generator runs 30% longer). Then run a couple of regular gasoline loads through it and see if the generator still runs as efficiently (cleaned out). If it runs better after the acetone but drops down again when loaded with straight gas, then it's possible it's doing something to the gasoline. If it continues to run well with straight gasoline, it was probably a cleaning issue.

Mileage wise, that's true. That's because for the most part, gasoline is a commodity that works the same in each car. They do imply that their product is better for your car than the other guy's product.
Chevron with Techron exceeds the EPA requirement for detergents.
