Put my engine in water

I was wheeling last night and put the front left(battery side) of my engine under water about 20 minutes later still stuck my battery light came on. And a few minutes later every light on my dash came on there was water in the truck. I finally got out and drove my truck to my buddies house so I could clean it out. But now it wont start tried to jump it off but only get a click noise. Anyone know what the problem could be?

hydrolocked engine could be another issue. very bad issue

 

might want to specify exactly what its doing and people will be more help that way. is the starter making any noise? what are the gauges doing or any warning lights? does the issue seem electrical or mechanical? does the engine turn over just not fire? or not do anything at all?

 

My intake isnt wet and the water didnt get very high on that side. I turned it off and then started it backup and drove it about 5 miles back to my buddies house.

 

I'd say the reason it won't start is cause you sank it! Lol. How'd you do it! Sounds like a good story!

All my lights come on in the truck like it normally does. But when I try to crank it all it does is click I think its the starter clicking because when the starter relay is pulled out of the fuse box it doesnt click. The engine doesnt turnover at all.

 

try hitting the starter with a hammer? Maybe it froze up. That trick used to work on starters that were going out and wouldn't start 100% of the time.

 

could be a starter, but i think you may be buying a new engine

It was the starter hit it with a hammer and it started but I tested the alternator and its bad

 

Yeah pull em apart and clean em out. Worth a shot.

I sank my old 2wd chevy one time (sitting in the truck the water was above the dash) and cut off on me in the hole, but it started right up and all I did was change all the fluids. Maybe it just needs to dry out.

 

X2 Put it all in a giant ziploc bag with some rice.

I would definetly pull start out and clean contacts etc. etc. there was a write up on this issue not long ago when people submerge their trucks something about solnoids sticking and what not. Not sure about alternator but it beats buying a new starter. So. Tell us us the story on how you did this.!!!

If you were able to drive it to your buddies house...You're DAMN LUCKY!!

FYI - when you sink your truck and it STALLS, NEVER EVER EVER EVER turn that key to start it....or you WILL break things!!!

My guess (as I've seen this countless of times) - the alternator isn't working properly and you've already killed your battery. Take the alternator out, have it cleaned thoroughly, take out the brushes and clean them (and/or replace). Mud gets in the alternator and it can't function to charge the battery and the battery will die quickly.

And that's just a starting point - You don't know what else you could've messed up being under water.

 

Ok the story of how it happened. My buddy called me up wanting to go out because he just fixed his axle. So I went We got out to where we usally do some light mudding. But all the rain we have been getting turned it into a mess. the river was about 50 feet closer than normal. We managed to get back to the trail and theres a hill climb that a few months ago got tore up by some 37 super swampers I havnt made it up since. So I was taking a side trail to go around it so I could watch my buddy try and get up it. I got on the trail and noticed the water was getting deep so I tried to stop and in the process my truck slid into a rut and the water was up high on my bumper and I wasn't moving I got high centered. My friend who was riding with me said" dude there is water coming into your truck" I didn't believe him and then I looked and the water quickly was up by my knees. It took a hour to get me out of the whole. In the process an engine block got cracked in a old f250 ranger with a 424 in it. A 1st gen transfer case grenaded it self. And after I got out of the whole thanks to a buddies 4runner we all went home.
