Again.. Not going to chop apart post in this thread for the sake of keeping it civil. However the Bible Thumpers are proving a point: every statement they make must be justified by either long winded rebuttals that lead to things not on point or pasive aggressively insinuate nonbelievers are not up to standards.

The heathens are upfront and honest. So what's the deal with you folks?

Yes you do. You make and ascertain judgments 24/7. We all do. You are now wise enough not to make assumptions. :D

    A) I'm not a "bible thumper"

    B) The thread is a discussion...and has been civil from all sides. If some posts are to long winded for you, you are welcome to skip those.

If you are seeing "passive aggressive" in any of my posts...you are reading into it or trying your best to pick an internet fight.

Much of what has been posted here is not on point (especially OP point). That is the nature of a discussion. Some have injected humor...some serious points/counter points...heck, some are talking wine & women.

Once anger, name calling and personal attacks begin...the thread is locked and folks become insulted. Never my intention.

Post your position...share your thoughts...have some fun...and we can all be friends at the end and in the next thread.

I hope this wasn't too long winded. :D

    Actually AL, I do not.

If you read my post carefully, I said: "as far as judgement is concerned...I judge no one. not saying I never have, but it never provided the results I was seeking. So I learned not to do so."

point being...I no longer judge people.

of course I make calculative "judgements" each day...don't want to back out of the driveway and run over the fire hydrant. :D

This type of thread always Sparks debate. So far no one is asking for any justification of believes. Not even the existence of god's. So far the only questions posed are about the choice of religion and the good that has come out of that choice. The responding party's can not answer even simple questions about that.

Most responded to the choice of religion question in the poll.

Most "choose" the religion they are raised with. Basically, the religion of their parents. Some change to a different religion as adults. Some decide not to have any particular faith in any deity...possibly because of their parents, or other personal reasons.

As far as "the good that has come out of that choice"...many find personal peace in worship. Many find answers to life's questions. Many find comfort in the power of prayer.
Many follow the example of Jesus Christ and choose a life of helping others...either within their own community, or around the world.
Some just enjoy the camaraderie of others with the same interests & beliefs. Many enjoy worship in song. (some famous performers started in the church)
Many find help with addiction (be it drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc) through faith and from others in their church. Many find marital help...struggles with financial issues...the list goes far.

How about this good that is Christian based:
    www.mercyministries.org

^^^ helping young girls who have been abused and/or sold into human trafficking and sex slavery.

I have met Nancy Alcorn personally, this lady is a blessing to these young girls. Ms. Alcorn gave up a very prosperous career to follow what she believes God placed in her heart. She has built several facilities around the country (and world), and is planning to build one in Florida...in my community. And yes...I plan to make a sizable contribution to her in this effort. [that gives me personal peace and hope in our effed-up world...and I only make the contribution statement to further my point, not to celebrate my charity]

I hope I was able to answer your questions, or at minimum...shine some light on the position of many Christians. As I posted earlier...others will have to speak of their particular beliefs, be it Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.

and again, great thread. thanks for allowing me to be a part of it...and thanks for the civility.

gotta go now...big day in our house of worship this morning...Palm Sunday.

I don't know that answer. I don't doubt evolution and/or science, but where did that first single cell organsim come from after the big bang? (and there may be an easy answer to that, I just didn't pay attention much in school)

Despite what you hear, we were given the free will to make our own decisions. Nothing is set out according to a plan that doesn't deviate. Why is that commonly overlooked among atheists?

Probably because there are Christian denominations that believe in predestination. Ever hear of John Calvin?

Edit: also because an omniscient God would already know what you would choose. If God already knows how things will go, you didn't really have the free choice.

Let me stop you right there. I specificity asked what good comes from these monotheist religions? Hope and other feel good emotions are not help. They are a cheep cover like a bandade on such problems and also a crutch that enables people who are down on their luck and have problems to us religion as a excuse to cover their lazy shortcomings. You want to find religion? Visit a prison. The people there never thought of church before they wound up there. But you will not find a parole application without Jesus name on it.

Larry I love God and understand I never mentioned here before. My house of worship is nonexistent. The moral code I and a lot of others live by is what God wants: Be responsible for your self. Help others in need (not lazy). Guess I'm old testament...

Again you are lumping all religions and beliefs together (not you directly), it is a common misconception when someone mentions they are religious.

Its hard not to when they all are branched off the same book. Its just that your specific church chooses to edit their bible differently.

If I missed that conversation earlier, sorry. I've just been following along for a couple days.

They all use the same book, they all call themselves Christians. Kinda hard not to lump them all together. Impossible not to, really, because these squabbles are within a religion I don't subscribe to. Unless you are asking an atheist to decide who the "real" Christians are. Sounds like a bad idea to me.
