^ You can usually get the long cages cheap, as there always seems to be a shortage of shortcage XTR thanks to the DH contingent. at least around here!

Haha, my only problem is that I have no idea wtf that means. That's why I still have the stock LX one. I mean I almost picked an XTR up for like $110 a while back but I didn't know what the difference was between short cage and long cage.

short cage gets used up by the downhill racers around here. because it is shorter it is less likely to get smashed by the high speed rock impacts they tend to suffer

short cage also seems to need tuning more often.

long cage seems to shift smoother, needs adjustment less, but is more prone to damage for the obvious reasons!

I ride responsibly, so i dont really mind the long cage.

but be warned, shimano likes to make each generation of componentry exclusive. so a 2008-9 derailler may not work with a 2005 shifter. you may need new levers

and LX isnt a bad component series. if you want to upgrade, look for deals on XT.

XT is really great stuff, but not at the premium XTR price!

pricepoint (which is a site i like to pimp to everyone i meet!) might have an XT deal right now. i will check....

here's a smattering of derailleur parts(most under msrp!)... hope the link works!

    There's a link there?

Ok so I guess I have a long cage and I've had no problems with it...so long cage for me!

You're saying the XT's run at XTR prices???
Then I should just get an XTR...

no, they run on average 60 to 80 bucks cheaper MSRP.

but work just as good, for a few grams more in the weight department.

why the link didnt show up i dont know! but type in www.pricepoint.com

and when you get there type in "shimano" then derailleurs. their prices should be less all around ( though it often excludes XTR )

    Coolio! Thanks!
Yea I really don't care about weight, that the bikes only downfall, it weighs like 34 pounds!...I'm all about the feel when you use it...but the gears make it seem really light. So it all levels out in the end.

it was like 40 bucks less there!

PS. i think my Scott YZ-1 is around 44. but i have some BMX parts on it!

I suggest that you don't upgrade anything on that bike (except for maybe tires and saddle.) Wait until you break some stuff and then you can replace it. I also wouldn't go for anything more than LX. You're not likely to notice the difference between LX and XT. The big difference between XT and XTR is the weight savings, which will translate to a less rugged product.

Those tires are an upgrade...2.3 inches wide, could go wider on the front but it would look weird and then I could never rotate them.
The saddle is kinda crappy and I have another of the same seat but I don't want to put it on, I think I might sell it instead because it doesn't fit the bike itself.
The XTR also has sealed bearing which are pretty nice to have but I don't think I'll be doing much upgrading to it now, gotta save for that Tacoma and get rid of the Mazda. :D

Anything from STX (old group), Deore, LX or XT is gonna last until you crash & break it or wear it out & by wear it out I mean 15 yrs of constant use, real gritty put up muddy trail use. I am not mr. washit as soon as I'm back home, weigh 200lbs & just white lightning the chain before next ride & have broken things only when blunt force trauma was applied for the most part. I have worn out a few bottom brackets that were not at least LX level. Most of the difference as was stated is gonna be weight savings & otherwise it'll be whether you're going with silver or black components. It's all good. My suggestion when buying a bike is to go for best frame/suspension & upgrade components as they fail or as you have money to upgrade. It's easier & more cost effective to replace components on a good frame than it is to move all your good components over to another frame. You rarely get off only having to recable things, usually one or more components won't fit new frame. But...when you have 12 working bikes & a buttload of spare parts, something's bound to work for the time being.lol. Important part is to just ride, get muddy, catch air as much as possible because time stops when your in the air, the more you catch the younger you feel & just like on motorcycles...keep the rubber side down (when on the ground).

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.

buy it. I paid about 650 for my Trek 6 series about a year and a half ago. if you can buy that for 700 i wouldn't hesitate a bit.

if i had a guess though i would say thats a 1700 dollar bike, not 700.

I have a Medium White Santa Cruz Chameleon hardtail that I bought in Feb 08 for $1700 brand new. I am 5'6" and the Medium is just a bit tall for me. If I can get a good price for it, I might consider selling it and get a small frame moutain bike. I am new to moutain bike and I enjoy riding my chameleon.

when you get there, buy me 10 of them.

I guess I've spent too many years working in a bike shop. I don't think I ever actually got paid with cash. Everytime it was going towards some bike parts... The largest retail value of one of my bikes was about $4500, $4000, $3800, $3500, and $3300. Of course, I paid significantly less than that, and was able to flip them after a year for about my purchase price.

lucky. i always have enough money to get into biking, bike for awhile, and then get out of biking cause i can't afford the parts to keep going (repair, upgrade, etc.)

I haven't really been riding for about 4 years. I held on to all my bikes. I'll eventually trade them in when I start riding again.

Waiting to get another one. Had an actually not-so-bad Haro stolen a few months back.

Can't wait to get another one, though... Lot's of fun to be had here:
