I just put on my G4.
Got it from truckaddons.com for 5% cheaper than anyone else, and recieved it in 7 days. Truckaddons got some negative press but I would buy from them again, no question!
Most of it is a one man's (person's) job except at the beginning, I had no help and scratched up the plastic on the bed rails, of my brand new truck, as I was doing the initial setup. Oh well it's a truck! And, only a few small scratches... THANK GOD!
Anyways, after the the mock up, and alignment it's a breeze! The instuctions are detailed and written by Americans, so they make sense.
Take your time on the alignment and you shouldn't have any issue, I had a slight gap variance and I was able to correct it with a rubber mallet.
It looks great, and is highly functional. Buy one.

Anyone no how to fix small scratches to plastic?

 

I just installed mine the other day. Also got it from truckaddons. I had to wait almost 3 weeks to get mine. I agree with you for the most part except for one fact. I didn't like how they made you guess at the beginning on where to put the guide rails when (if you want it to match) it's gonna need to be in an exact spot to catch the rear bolts for the lock.. The ones that used the pre-existing holes.

You can really only be off by an inch or two but that's enough to cause a bit of an eye soar to me. No one else will ever notice it but I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I'll post pics of what i'm talking about tomorrow.

I also used both packets of adhesion promoter on the guide rails and was left with nothing for the weather seals on the front and back of the lid, I hope they hold. That one was my own fault for not reading the directions carefully.

If anyone gets this cover and wants to install themselves feel free to contact me and I'll tell you the mistakes that I made in more detail so that you hopefully won't repeat them.

 

Yeah, I took a long time lining things up. It was anxiety provoking because if you were off on your alignment you were screwed. You have to glue down the rails and pray that your tape guides were right.
I watched a video on Foldacover's website about lining things up, that helped, and I downloaded the instructions and really meditated on them for a few days before I got my cover. I definately agree that they should have spent more time with the finer points of alignment since that is by far the most difficult part.
I also agree that they could have been more generous with the adhesive promoter. But, it helped that I had read the instructions multiple times to know I would have to save a packet for the end.
It is hard not to be perfectionistic on this sort of thing. I would have paid someone else to do it if I could trust that they were as perfectionistic as me. It really infuriates me when I pay someone to do work for me and they do a half assed job.

 

That thing looks pretty awesome, I am assuming its water proof, have you tested it yet?

 

Here are the little issues with mine.

A bit of a gap between the top guide rail weather seal and the actual cover. This was a result of me going a bit too wide trying to make sure I left myself enough room to mount the cover. At the time I told myself it'd be better off with a little extra room than not enough.


Here you can see that there is a second weather seal on the bottom that should keep the moisture out. So the first photo isn't really an issue.



Here was my major issue with the cover, see how the guide rail sits about an inch back past the actual cover. I followed the instructions to the letter and this is how it turned out because they basically have you guess at how far forward or back to mount the guide rails. However they need to be in an exact spot to catch the locking mechanism that uses pre-existing static holes that determine the exact location of the cover.

 

I don't want to argue but I think the instructions were very specific as to the gap on the sides, 1/32 to 1/16 and to lining up the rails to the top. I really don't think you "followed the instructions to the letter". They were very in depth for the most part, the pictures were hard to make out at times but once I really looked I could usually see what they were trying to point out. I did call them at one point and got right through, as I was lining things up there seemed like too big a gap above the molding but the tech assured me the moulding would take up the gap.

It looks like your rear moulding is on backwards or something. It is supposed to continue the angle of the hatch and come forward.

As far as the water tight question I am not sure yet, light sprinkle, yes, downpour don't know. The manufacture says it isn't water tight in their literature but I think that is so they don't get sued.

I am not sure how to post a picture of my install, I tried once already and everything went blank. I'll keep trying.

My rear weather seal is on the same way as yours it's just hard to tell from the pic.

My instruction packet said slide the cover back so the tailgate latch hits the tailgate and then move it forward 1/16" which I did, measured it twice, marked the spot.
The spot was right, but in the end the cover was almost an inch from where the instructions said it would be. This was because of the pre-existing holes that the locking pin installs to. That one piece determines where the cover should lie.

You said you adjusted yours with a rubber mallet, the guide rails?
I wonder if I can try that?

I could fix every issue with this cover in about 20 minutes with some alcohol and double sided tape. But it's not worth the trouble, ya know?

It's really not that bad. I still like love the cover. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get some lights in my bed now that will come on automatically when I open the cover.

 

Yeah, the rubber mallet worked but I butted my rails right up against the top, I kinda figured that once it was installed there would be a gap and there was. I only need to move the rail on one side about 1/16 at the most.
At least you didn't scratch up your bed rails like I did!
I was able to repair the 2 scratches by wet sanding them and using a vinyl repair kit to fill in the deeper one, but they are still slightly noticable. If it wasn't dark I would send you some pictures.

 

Just ordered mine from truck-addon for $670 shipped. Can't wait!

 

I washed my truck today, including the cover, and was spraying water at the cover from every possible angle and did end up with a little bit of water inside the bed.
I think most of it came through the tailgate though.
I'll have to install the tailgate seal I got for free and see if that helps. Did anyone put one of those in?

 

I think it leaks thru the gaps between the mouldings on the top of the tailgate like where you have the red circle on the last picture. I can see daylight thru that area. That curved end cap on the rails has no moulding on it, I am pretty sure that's the culpret.

 

Hey guys glad to see that the write up was helpful, so far my cover has been relatively leak free.
Most if any water that gets in bed comes from me opening the cover when there is standing water on it. Other than that I have been really happy with it.

dude thats teh best write up with pics I could have asked for, did it ever rain for you to be able to tell if it leaks? I think you made up my mind to go and get one. But I thought it came with a basket to go under the first panel closest to the cab for access and storage? I guess thats an extra expense

It rained pretty good today, and yes it leaks.

I could see water tracks down the sides of my bed. From what I see it is due to the fact that the Tacoma plastic bed rail covers are raised areas and non-raised areas. The adhesive tape on the Foldacover side rails makes contact with the raised areas but not the unraised. This leaves little valleys for the rain to enter. I intend to caulk the outside of the guide rail with black caulk in order to seal the valley troughs and I will let you know how this works.

 

Good idea! I installed the free tailgate seal that truck addons threw in with my purchase. I only applied it to the sides of the tailgate but it definitely closed that gap up and I can no longer see into my bed.

It rained all night last night and on my drive to work this morning. While there was water in my bed, all my gear stayed dry so that was good.
I think between a good tailgate seal and caulking the sides of the guide rail like you mentioned, the bed should stay pretty dry.

 

Great! I haven't installed my free moulding yet, good to know it filled the gap. You say your gear stayed dry, that's good, did you notice the same leakage down the bed sides?
