Review Fold a cover G4 elite

Oh, and newfie the inner box is alot extra, and really cool, but I don't think they make it for the Tacoma anyway. I just got a Loading Zone™ Cargo Gate from Sam's Club for $68 and it works great under the cover.

 

So is there anything that you can buy instead of calking your bed liner that the company has like some kind of seal strips?

 

I think caulking is probably the way to go but I intend to call the company before I do so to see if they have any better ideas. They have nothing on thier website. What do you have against caulk?

 

I didn't notice water coming down the sides of the bed, i just saw it pooling up in between the channels at the bottom. I'll post a pic of the tailgate seal tomorrow if I remember, lol.

wouldn't be kinda messy, if / when the tonneau cover is pulled off? Are you planning on putting it on the top of the bed liner where the tonneau meets it?

 

No the caulk would go on the bottom outside edge of the side rails of the cover where it meets the plastic bed rail covers of the truck. The small arrow points to the edge to caulk, the large arrow to the lower areas where water likely gets in.

 

well I'm just wondering how its going t look on the top of your bed rail like you showed it when you flip up the cover exposing the top of the bed liner, I'm kinda interested to see a pic of it when its done if you got the time after you do it... btw, I think I'm going to get me one of those tonneaus

 

The guide rails stay down all the time. If you completely removed the cover to haul something, the guide rails will still be in the same spot.

Let us know if caulking it solves the water leak.

 

I got mine today, less than a week to get! Along with my "extend a truck".

My locking mechanism is different though. And now I realize I got the REGULAR fold-a-cover The locking on this thing is garbage. It looks like you can pry it open with your hands. How is the elite? Looks much better. WTF am I supposed to do now?

I didn't realize this until AFTER I put it on of course.

 

k man now you got me kinda scared, I mean looks good but can you fire me a pic of this lock and what you mean about it being shit

 

the one i ordered was the old model. apparently the new model (g4 elite) has the better locking. i emailed the place i ordered it from to see what they have to say. i wouldnt feel safe keeping anything of value in the back right now with this pos lock. ill take some pictures tomorrrow.

 

always place blame on them telling them that they sent you the wrong one, when you do it pissed off, they tend to want to make it up to you, say you ordered the elite. and they sent you the wrong one and how could you know til you saw the lock as its pretty much the only diff

 

Well, they emailed back saying they cant return it since it was installed. I explained that it is a locking cover and i don't feel that it really is. I will give them a second shot to make right before i threaten to dispute the charges. I also emailed fold-a-cover today to see what they say. Their site advertises it as "From tools and building supplies to golf clubs and camping gear, Fold-a-Cover keeps your cargo safe." Yea right. I don't feel safe.

 

I was wondering why you got it so cheap, you paid less than I did from the same company, so I figured you had the 5 foot bed.
I don't think you are going to have any luck returning it, and I don't know how you can dispute the charges if you installed it.

Do the right thing, accept that it was your mistake and live with it. It looks good, if someone wants to get at your stuff they can get in easy enough whether or not the locks are good. If it has locks it will keep the honest people out, the others will get past any lock you put on it.

Plenty of people keep there stuff under tonneau covers with no locks at all, out of sight out of mind.

The reason this is a great cover has nothing to do with the locks, it is functional and convenient. It opens in the front and the back, and you can remove it fairly easily. You did a great job installing it by the way. It looks great!

 

well i'd say fight dude, because why settle if you dont want it, from everything I heard the new one is a hell of alot better, I heard one guy talk about how his ls serries I think its called only lasted him a year and now is on his curb for the garbage. So shoot maybe mention how your wife is thinking of a truck and you'll be looking for another tonneau in a couple months. But I'm curious, have you seen the lock on the G4, what exactly is the difference

 

I don't know what else to say other than it is garbage. Here are a couple of pictures of the locking setup:








You can see the adjustable plastic triangle thingy that latches onto the black metal piece in the first picture. It is maxed out (past where it should go) on the aluminum rods...and it's hard to see in the first picture, but it barely latches half-way with it hanging over the rod ends. No to mention that thing piece of alum and the plastic all flex so much that you can pull it up half an inch by hand.

Compare that to the new latching system





it doesn't rely on a long thin piece of aluminum to hold the cover down in a prying motion, it is more like a trunk of a car. It secures around the rod and locks it down. The only way you will get any flex is if the striker flexes and it doesn't look too flimsy to me.

 

well I'll let you know in the next two weeks I'll have mine, you'll be alittle pissed to know that when talking to the dealer taht I'm getting it through, I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't end up getting the one that you got L series I think it is, and he told me not to worry that those aren't on the market anymore, and yes this dealer is in the u.s.

 

Certainly if they sent you the wrong one by mistake, fight it RoyB, maybe the manufacture will help you out, point out this thread and all the free advertising they are getting.
The LS is still on the manufacture's website and they are available all over the web. Please everyone be sure of what you are ordering, if a dealer has an inventory of the LS you may be getting that. Unless it says G4 Elite it is likely the LS. It may be tempting because it is about $100 cheaper. But the Cheapest price for the G4 is 775.80 and you can get 5% off of that through Truckaddons.com
