Giving it a little "tooth" helps a ton in adhesion.

I was gonna try Trenchers, but they don't do so well in the loose stuff. These were a bit cheaper ($26 shipped) and they come mounted.

    From theleeway.org

I feel like my Facebook account has evolved into an elaborate, interactive birthday calendar.

My only posts (besides advertising the Leeway) are “happy birthday” messages to friends and acquaintances. I don’t recount inside jokes; I try to refrain from posting smart-aleck retorts and much-needed grammar corrections; and I don’t even wear out Facebook chat any more.

I could argue that my posts falling outside of these categories mean more, and that’s certainly true. But I believe it’s the evolution of Facebook that makes these practices worth noting in the first place.

Facebook has evolved into a default exhibition of one’s life, interests, and beliefs.

The evolution of humankind - from Homo sapiens to Homo faciens.

After conversing with someone, it’s become natural to add them on Facebook. The fun situations are the adds not spawned from a typical “meet-and-greet” interaction: random adds (from either user), mutual friend recommendations, or adding by association.

The first choice is the most interesting because you learn that someone is a liberal, Methodist, Lady Gaga-loving, Pretty Little Liars-watching person who – like you – says “Wed-nes-day” aloud to properly spell the word…all without ever contacting the person. I believe we cynics should band together and decide that get-to-know-you nonsense is off-the-table when this information is online and accessible. With that logic, what’s the point of getting to know someone? It’s as if “friendship” is immediate with a click of a button.

The second choice is Internet introductions or cyber blind dating. Avoid these situations. You deserve a better means of friendship than that. If you truly want to get to know someone talk to them, call them, Skype them, but do not engage in solely text-based communication. If they don’t want to talk to you like a pre-21st century human being, they simply don’t need to be in your life. (There’s no wonder relationships young and old are amuck; people think their options are unlimited thanks to a “more connected” Earth.)

The third choice risks human interaction. It makes the “add me after talking to me” stage awkward if you’ve added them before talking to them. Just because you’re in the same class as someone doesn’t mean you can automatically be FBO (Facebook Official, older folks). Try introducing yourself first; it works wonders! Business transactions used to be confirmed by a handshake and not a click on PayPal, you know.

While I’ve increasingly become more negative about online interactions, I believe Facebook is here to stay for a while. It’s so ingrained in our society that gullible parents allow their young kids to have an account. I remember getting a Bebo account in the 7th grade, but not when I was an 8-year-old. What do youngsters have to post, anyway? “omg justen beibur is sooo hottt,” “i love my best freind @Bessy Angelcakes,” or “my mommy just taght me how to multiply”? (Hip, hip for parenthood.)

Perhaps I have changed so much that I’m beginning to fit into the mold of “wait…tell me how to use this Facebook thing again.” However, I submit that Facebook has evolved from an extraneous feature of life to a “socially necessary” component of communication. When Mark Zuckerberg started making tidal waves in the stock market, I knew something was up: Facebook is here to stay.

At least for a little while, until – by the whims of competition – something better is developed. And, right now, I’m impatiently waiting for that development.

Twitter is its own separate thing. Google+ flopped. I have no professional life and thus have no use for LinkedIn. Facebook, its new timeline, and infinite FarmVille requests are pushing me away. What must I do?!

You know, there’s some information on the bottom of most individual’s “Info” tab. It’s called “Contact Information.” For those of us who self-disclose too much, there’s a phone number, e-mail address, and perhaps even a physical address. Call that phone number sometime. Initiate conversation with that Skype screen name. Or better yet – close the laptop, shut off the phone, find a friend, hug a friend, sit down, and talk. Your day will certainly be made.
