Any past F150 owners?

I know everyone is biased on automotive forums (even if it's slightly), however many of you on here seem to have pretty decent, and somewhat unbiased opinions.

Anyways, I have an 05 TRD AC 4x4 Tacoma. Love the truck. Love the looks. I want more space in the back of the cab. Ideally, I would get an 07+ DC tundra. However, I have my Tacoma paid for, and won't sell mine to enter into more payments (Even if they are small). I can essentially sell my 05 and buy and 05-06 F150 5.4 4x4 and come out about $3000 ahead. However, I've heard hit or miss things about them. My dad owns an 03 F250, and it's a decent truck. However, I've heard the 5.4 F150s are a bit sluggish and get pretty horrendous mileage. If this is the case, I don't know if it's worth my effort to gain cab room. Did any of you come to the Tundra from an F150? Have any of you had long term experience with them? What were your thoughts? I don't care about 0-60 times or which truck can outrace another from a stoplight. It's a truck, not a race car. I want payload, towing, and good cab room, with avg 15-16mpg. Doable with an F150?

 

I had a 2008 F150 4x4 limited. I didnt even own it a year and Ford bought it back. I had a bad vibration in the rear end and the dealer could not find the problem so they bought the truck back.

It all worked out great for me as I really wanted a Tacoma when i bought the F150. I had talked myself into the slightly larger F150.

I think (my opinion) is you may save dollars upfront. But over the life of both vehicles you will see that the toyota will have less problems and retain its value much better.

I had the 5.4l and my gas milage was killing me. When i pulled a trailer I was lucky to get 9-10 mpg. City driving I averaged 12-13 mpg.

You have to do what makes you happy. The real value for me was in the toyota.

 

I've got an '05 Expedition...not exactly a 150 but its about the same.

 

i had a 96 ford f150 302 for about 10 years. it was a nice truck for hauling and carrying but it was only a regular cab and 2 wheel drive so it broke my heart to sell it for something easier on gas and more room for the family. so i bought a 09 tacoma double cab. i know a few people with the newer fords and they don't really care for them, very hard on gas and something always wrong with them. if you want a full size i would get a chev. lots of power, better gas mileage and more dependable and they hold their value more. a tacoma is the best in the mid size class and the chev is the best in the full size class.

 

I would have an F150 myself if it were not for the fuel mileage. That was one of the many reasons I decided to go with the Taco. I have had great experience with my Fords in the past and have driven Fords most of my life. I am more than happy with my Taco.

 

I studied the F150's prior to buying my 2009 Doublecab. The backseat in the access cab was nearly as roomy as my DC and it had the bigger bed. I have family members with the F150's that have over 100K miles and still run flawlessly. Ultimately, I decided it was too big of a truck for my needs and gas mileage would suck.

I use my 4.0L V6 Taco for 90% city driving and have a heavy foot. I like to floor it between red lights . Anyway, my last 2 tanks got 15.35mpg and 15.45mpg (averaged 15.4mpg over 37 gallons).

I got the TSB completed and plan to add an additional leaf spring as well. I have great payload capacity and the cab is roomy enough for my 2 yr old daughter and her large carseat. The wife's Cheap Grand Cherokee has sat parked for the past month as we all want to ride in the truck!

As for your decision, remember resale value. The Taco will do much better than the F150. The trend in this country is going to be smaller=better. We are entering a recession and gas could easily creep back to $4.

i had an 02 f150 with the 4.6l v8. it was a good truck...............except,right as warranty ended(5 year/75k warranty) the transmission took a shit and ford wouldnt even help me out...............yet i had had it serviced by them. overall though.....i liked the truck. now the new body style f150's...................i dont like them at all. too heavy for one......and the motors aint got enough grunt. even the 5.4 doesnt really do anything for me. now, the 09 f150's.....supposedly have a better 5.4 with a bit more power/torque, but the 04-08 f150's.......nada. plus........i just cant seem to like the new body style at all.

 

I owned a 2005 F-150 Supercrew with the 5.4 V8, it had every option...sunroof, power sliding rear window, heated signal mirrors, etc. It was my very first new vehicle, but sadly we had to parts ways after only three years. Here are the pros: larger dimensions inside & out(obviously), towed and hauled with ease, and had a very comfortable interior(quiet and no annoying squeaks/rattles from the dash like my taco). Here are the cons, or at least issues I experienced: the truck is very hard on gas no matter how you drive it, 15 mpg would a good day on the highway...it just goes down from there. My emergency brake would engage on it's own at highway speeds...that was fun, anyway that was corrected via a TSB. I recieved a letter from Ford letting me know my fuel injectors could get stuck open or closed and they would cover the repair if it occured. The driver's side window stopped working under warranty. The brake dust generated by the front wheels was miserable. Changing the spark plugs, although the Ford states at 100k, may be an issue...go to the F-150 forum for the details....good luck with your decision!

 

I'll agree with the post above me, although I didn't have the emergency brake or window problem. I came to the 2007 Taco from a 2006 F150 Lariat Extended cab 5.4L 4x4 Smokestone metallic... one of my favorite pickups but not what I needed at the time. I also had 2 2002 F150s. I liked all of them and they all lived up to what they were supposed to do. The 2006 had a great ride and was very roomy on the interior and seemed to be solidly built. The engine ran great and would pull if I needed it to and I consistently got 17 mpg on the highway (120+ miles/day). In my opinion you can't go wrong with the F150 as a truck. As a financial investement... I'm not sure I'd buy one again after the hit I took on the trade-in. That's my two cents at least!

 

Thanks for the replies, guys. Honestly, I just don't think I would be happy. I like my truck too much. Honestly, I really should have gotten a double cab. If I could find someone to trade me, I would very seriously consider it. In fact, I have a WTT ad posted here now if anyone is interested

 

I really miss my old truck!! I do like my Tacoma, but sometimes I wish I never sold this baby.

When gas was $4 a gallon and i was driving over 70 miles 1 way to work it sucked. That's the whole reason I sold it. Some guy up in Kansas is now the proud owner of it.
I sold it about 2 or 3 months ago.
Now I only have to drive 120 miles week for work and I really miss my truck

 

Yeah I drive 150 miles a week. Starting around August it will be around 90% highway, too. Not sure mpg is a major of a factor anymore, but I still love my truck.

 

I currently own a 2002 F150 FX4 reg. cab short bed with the 5.4 v8.
I bought it brand new and currently have 74000 miles. I haven't had the first thing go wrong with this truck. Not even a light bulb go out. I plan on keeping it for many more years. Absolutely love it. The Tacoma is the wife's new toy.

 

On a side note, I did find an 07 Quad Cab Lariat 4x4 with 30,000 miles for $12,000. Mighty tempting.

how was the acceleration/power compared to the taco?

 

I was about to get one, my dad bought it as a work truck and would be eventually handed down to me. It was a 05 ext cab 4x4 with the 5.4L. It was a solid truck, but not as solid as the Tacoma IMO. We had a leveling kit with 33" tires and it consistently got 12mpg which is why we sold it. Other than the bad gas mileage it was a great truck.
