He will lose anything on the PC, if he needs to save stuff from the drive have him take it to a professional.

I know that re formatting involves re loading everything, os, drivers, the whole shebang, I'll ask him and try to post at lunch. He knows he will lose every file he has.

you can use a usb drive to copy off your documents first. The only risk with that is depending on where you got your trojan/virus, you can move it to the new installation. If you have word docs and thing like that you are find, but don't move any installation files to the reloaded OS.

Other than this, its pretty basic, insert in OS installation disk, reboot the PC, it will say "press any key to boot to disk" so press a key, and with any luck you will get to the install page.

    What brand of PC?

he already owns a license so he doesn't need to buy one. It may be a matter of finding one that he can use. The license isn't tied to the CD.

XP licenses/disks are no longer available. I believe he can get Win 7 for under 200 bucks, if he is a student, the book store on campus will have a very discounted price.

depending on how bad the "infection" is, most times it is best to format and reload to guarantee to get it all. I can spend 4 hours trying to clean it and not get it all or i can spend 2 hours, format, and reload the OS and I know i got it all.

He's not going to have to buy a license unless he's buying a licensed copy of Windows 7, which is really paying for the Prodkey or activation code (that 25 character popouri you type in at the end of install)

If it's an xp computer, I'd check specs first before jumping to win 7. Win 7 uses way more in resources compared to xp, so if it's like a pent 4 with 1GB of ram, it'll run shitty.

you might still be able to get recovery discs from the MFG, prob around 40 bucks if they're still availible
