cap vs tonneau cover

I am looking to upgrade my tacoma with a cap or tonneau cover. Any thoughts which are better?

 

Do you intend to camp / overnight ?

 

I like them both but it really depends on what you plan on using your bed for. I currently have a cap on my truck. The cap is nice for camping.

 

I was originaly thinking a tonneau cover but it holds so much more with a cap. So we got it for when we go camping

 

I went with a tonneau on mine, much easier to remove when I need the bed space for something tall, and easier to store, a cap takes lots of space.

 

I went with the tonneau, and it has been very convenient. But, a couple times a year, I wish I had gone cap, like hunting season when I haul a bunch of equip to the mountains, and it invariably rains, and I could use the extra space and security, and even a place to crawl in out of the weather. It's a tough call.

 

You could make it easier and go with a Softopper or a Bestop topper, I might do that when my tonneau wears out. Those are easy to put up and take down, easy to store too.

 

Tonneau's give you better visibility and perhaps more security as there are no windows to break and nobody can see in. However, caps are handier for day-to-day use and you can also load more stuff under them. You also can't put a bird dog under a Tonneau (well, you can but he won't be a happy bird dog). You can't haul large stuff under a cap and a Tonneau is easier to take off but I haul large things with a trailer anyway.

Pro's and cons weighted I always go with the cap.

 

Thats a big difference IMO. It all depends on what your going to use the truck for?

 

IMO, it would come down to personal preference. If it was me, I would be going with a cap. I like the idea of having a cover over the bed, but still being able to fit "stuff" in it is a huge factor in my decision process. I camp, have dogs so it would suit me better. You also have the option of putting a rack on top of the cap for whatever else. It all depends on what your wanting to do with the truck like everyone else is saying.

 

You should see if you can find a used cap. It makes the decision easier since they are a lot cheaper used vs. new. Then you don't feel guilty if its off the truck not being used for a few months.
