:woot: Just ordered a Katadyne bottle from campsaver - those things never seem to go on sale so I thought I'd take advantage of the 20% coupon.

This is the one I ordered http://www.campsaver.com/mybottle-purifier

I've been looking at a filter for a while because the main bulk/weight of my pack is camera gear and water. I hope that with this I will be able to cut down on the weight and use the Katadyne when the situation allows.

I've done a little research and they seemed to be the more respected brand. Once I get mine and can use it I will chip in my $0.02 but for now I will refer you to Aaron since he has used them.

Maybe he's being a gentleman and carrying some of his wife's things too....wait a min....I just remembered we're talking about Scott. Nevermind....

I have the one without the straw. you squeeze the bottles instead and it sucks up through tthe filters and out the top. Love em!!!! OH... One warning Lisa... when you get yours, run about 2-3 bottle threw before actually drinking. Both of mine had excess carbon that came out the first few bottles. it was nasty looking

as far as the question about the filters... I have never run into any issues in the 5-6 years I have owned them. Being that I don't get to backpack that much, I change my filters once every other year regardless just to be safe. try to pull out of a decently clean stream as well. that will definitely help preserve the filters and when you are not using it, make sure the filters get dried properly. I take all of mine apart (3 sections: carbon filter, paper filter, and some other piece) and let it sit out to dry.

Since you're all talking filters. Any experience with higher volumn filters. Something that would suffice for 2 people on week long excursions, but not so large as to be a hassle on shorter weekend trips...?

That's not base weight. That includes 2 qts water (max I carry, mainly over dry, high passes) and 1 qt port, but all in Platypus bags, which are way lighter than Nalgenes. That's for a 9 day drip going up the back side of Whitney, so it includes a little extra food. Need a bear can, fuel for that long, half the group gear (tent, water filter), Thermarest and Thermarest camp chair (big creature comfort), appropriate, but still light, layers for anything in the High Sierra/above 10k feet and higher at all times. Sony point and shoot camera w/ extra battery. Trekking poles. My old NF Snow Leopard pack weighs 6 lbs. I am aiming to trim about 2 lb with a new pack if I can. We weigh everything, and have trimmed everything we can so far...

Hell no. She carries the kitchen. Honestly, for a skinny girl, she is a freaking mountain goat with long legs. She goes.

Don't most filter systems suggest you wash them before using? I know my old MSR pump (don't recommend) suggest that as did the Katadyne.

And good call on the Platypus. Also, if you drink wine, they'll hold a bottle with no air gap

 thanks for the heads up on the cleaning. i figured on running a few bottles through just to flush the system out. do you store your's in pieces as well (once its dried) or assembled?

TW strikes again and continues to drain another bank account....
I know that Katadyne has a pump style of filter. it seems like it could be a little awkward for one person to operate but good for 2 people

 the woman goes camping and hiking and you still make her cook? *sigh*

Hell yeah, Platypus FTW. I bought 3 1qt bladders. And the bottoms bellow out so they are free-standing.
    1. Water
    2. Nuun (electrolyte) mix
    3. Port (we called it passport, because it had to last more than a week, and we only enjoyed it in camp on days that we went over a pass :D.

I attached a hydration tube to one, and this stays outside the pack and clips onto a strap. The second also stays outside. Easy to swap and fill, no big, heavy hydraiton bladder in the pack.

Platypus actually markets a wine-specific one, but it costs more and I think it is BS. Just use a normal one..

    bahaha story of my life!
I have the Katadyne Hiker filter. I love it. It fills up my camelback (2 liter) bladder with the quick connect system in the hose in about 1 min of pumping. It is also pretty easy to assemble and everything and get going on filtering water
I never washed mine. All I did was run a few of the bottles or pumped the Kat. Hiker for a bit and have been fine. Has a plasticy taste for a bit but that is all.
I just put it all back together when I store it. Haven't had any issues with it. Also makes the pieces inside less likely to get cracked or something if they are snapped together.

I got one of these, too, after I threw my old Sweetwater off a cliff while screaming my head off. The Hiker is great. Fast, simple.

anyone have a hennessy hammock? or experience with them? i'm looking at the explorer deluxe... i'm a tall guy, with the typhoon fly, because it seems every time i go camping... it's a monsoon 90% of the time...
