how much oil do you put in?

I put in almost 5.5 quarts of oil and I couldn't read it good but it looked almost to full mark. This morning I checked it and it was about 3/8" above full. I drained some out but still can't read stupid dip stick cause it smears up the stick. I think it looked about half way between the low and full but their is usually a stop in oil about half way. Does oil rise over night I thought it dropped?

 

I put about 5.2 qts in mine and it read right at full.

 

If you leave the dip stick out for a minute then take the reading there is no smearing.

I put in 5 liter = 5.283qt with a new filter and its just a hair under full.

 

Did you drain the oil when it was hot or cold? I always drain mine when it's still hot so more oil drains out. I put back in 5.5 quarts and it shows perfect on the stick.

 

Well I don't know how much I emptied but I hope it wasn't too much cause I drove to work. Ill try leaving the stick out fir a while cause sanding it didn't help. I think I should have around 5 quarts

 

I warmed it up for min and it was warm coming out. Not cold

 

Owner's manual says;
2TR-FE
5.8 liters with filter, 5.1 without.
1GR-FE 2 wheel drive excluding Prerunner
4.5 liters with filter, 4.2 without.
4 wheel drive and Prerunner
5.2 liters with filter, 4.9 without.

 

You mean... there's actually good information for the Owner of a vehicle in the Owner's Manual?!?!

Take the dipstick out before you even start draining and don't put it back in until you've put in 5 quarts. Then stick it to see how much more you need. Even using this method, the dipstick sucks and I tend to put in 5.5 regardless.

 

I dump 5 1/2 quarts and then check it. Some times it takes the other half quart, sometimes not.

 

I just put in 5.5 and I don't even bother to check the stick. Being a little bit over isn't going to hurt anything.

 

2 gallons, some is good more is better right?

 

I still have the original Owner's Manual for the '77 in my sig pic. If you can believe it, they were putting the oil capacity in the manual even back then. Of course, you have to learn how to read hieroglyphics first.

 

I like to put vegetable oil in mine. It's cheaper. Oil is oil right?

 

Guilty as charged, I actually read the whole manual. Just give me a cigarette before I face the firing squad.

 

Damn... I haven't gone that far with it. I have half the book dog earred with the few quick reference pages (wheel torque specs, how to reset the maint. req'd light, capacities, etc).

 

I got bored right after I bought the truck. We had just moved and all of our stuff was still in transit.

 

Does the 4 cylinder hold the same amount or less?

Does the manual have a 'quick reference' in it? with Oil needed with change, torque specs, dif volume, all that info?

It'd be nice if it did, my dirt bike's manual does. Right on the inside cover it tells me all teh specs, wheel and tire recomended sizes, oil for changes, cable lengths, everything. Super nice.
