Question about painting rims

I am considering painting my rims black but I have little oxidization spots on the rims. How do I get rid of them or can I just paint over them and have the paint stick?
The spots aren't that bad, just a couple small spots but I don't want to have to get them fixed first as I imagine it will be expensive.

Any thoughts?

 

I painted my stock steel rims black. Look up a thread if you need step by step. It's simple. Scuff sand, clean, prime, paint, done.

Treat those spots the same. Sand them out, clean and prime.

 

Ok, does it work the same on alloy wheels?

 

scotchbrite pad, brake cleaner or other cleaner that evapotates off nicely, and then paint away with whatever method you perfer. mine had the oxidation bubbles as well. i just spent some extra time on those parts with the scotchbrite pad to get them level with the unharmed paint. you can't tell there was ever an issue. i did mine with bedliner though, so it tends to fill in imperfections better.

Sand blast first for the best results. Paid $20 for 4 rims at a do it yourself place. Then use etching primer and paint.

 

Can you get smooth bed liner? Or does it only come textured? I would prefer paint but I just don't want it to peel or look shitty which is why I'm hesitant to do this in the first place.

just like everyone else has said will work fine, throw up some pics when u r done.

 

rustoleum spray bedliner is much smoother and finer than what you normally think of bedliner (like the roll on or professionally applied stuff). for refference, once it's dry, it feels very similar to a sheet of 120 grit sand paper. if you're looking for a flatter finish, it's the way to go, butfor gloss you'll have to use regular paint.

I personally WOULD NOT recommend Rustoleum Bedliner spray. Although the results come out great once you finish, it is not very durable. I had to recoat my light bar twice because of this crappy product. Yes I prepped it correctly this isn't my first rodeo.. The product just flat out blows.

 

i have to disagree with you. my wheels are holding up great (on and off road use). i build bed and roof racks and use the rustoleum bedliner on those and it holds up just fine. even takes abuse on sliders.

edit: also did my front bumper with it. two years later and it's still holding strong. only had to touch it up where i scraped the paint off on rocks while wheeling.

 

Ok so one for rustoleum and one against....I'll have to take a close look at my rims and see if I can just sand the bubbles down. and I need to look at some more pics of rad red tacos with black stock rims...

 

a can only runs about $7. you could pick up one and test it out on something to see if you like it/how it hold up. doesn't even have to be on the truck.

 

Good thing is it's cheap so it can be resprayed in minutes. Who knows mine didn't hold up probably because it was on my light bar on the front of my truck. Because I do about 95% of highway driving, it chipped in several places within 2-3 months. So I guess you could say it's impact resistance is POOR. Then again to be fair, it wasn't meant to be used for light bars.

 

you may have also gotten a bad can or two. one of our florida members sprayed his sliders with it. they were even bolt on, so he was able to prep them correctly off of the truck. a large amount of the paint chipped off in a matter of months. he got in contact with rustoleum and they refunded his money because they determined the batch of cans he bought were defective.

 

I think you may be right. That's EXACTLY what they did. They just chipped off in different spots. I figured maybe a rock impacted them but there were an awful lot of them on the light bar.

 

Now I'm going to head out this weekend and pick up some Rusto Bedliner spray. I've got the 17" FJ wheels, and think the wheels will look awesome black!

I was also thinking of doing this to my Westin Bull Bar, though not sure I can. I figure if I can't paint, I'll just leave it off the truck - previous owner put it on there.
