you'd have to go SAS, IFS wouldn't handle it at all with over 300ft/lbs of tq

I don't know much about diesels, is the 4BTA a 4 cylinder turbo diesel? I saw it was a 3.9L. Being a diesel I imagine it weighs a lot more than the 1GR, but would you see an improvement in mpg?

On a side note I had never heard of a crawl box until Chris mentioned it last night and that is pretty bad ass. Too much money for what little I would probably use it though.

yes the 4BTA is a 4cylinder turbo diesel, there are multiple exhaust manifolds to move the turbo away from the firewall. I'm not sure how much the engine weighs but a dana60 upfront would be the minimum I'd run upfront.

you've grossly under estimated the weight of how much a diesel engine weighs

Also if you are going to drop in a diesel, you are probably also going to have all that armor on as well.

reading through the 4bt threads the flywheel weighs up to 100lbs as well and you still have to add on starters and a 24v electrical system.

i don't know about the 1st gen, but the 1GR weighs about 375 lbs without coolant or oil or anything according to this: http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/pdf/1GRFE Engine4.0.pdf

haven't looked up the 4BTA yet.

EDIT: Looks like the 3.9L 4BTA weighs somewhere around 700-800 lbs.

Yeah, I know how they work, and the fact that their compression is so high they build them tougher to handle it which in turn causes them to last much longer. They work under the ideal gas law. As the cylinder compresses, the volume decreases causing pressure to increase which causes temperature to increase. You put it under enough pressure and the temperature will increase enough to cause the diesel to combust. thus no need for a spark plug.

As much as I would love a4bt I think it more practical to take a diesel out if the hillux trucks.

If it cost you about $6K to do and gave you about 10 more mpg at current prices ($3.65/gal and $4.05/gal) it would pay for itself in 100,000 miles, assuming you didn't do so much else too it that your wrecked that mileage boost. Still, at this point I would think it would be reasonable if your current engine is pushing 200,000+ miles and getting to the end of its life.

Not that their opinions matters, since it would be my money but my parents would throw a fit if I tore an engine out with less than 15,000 miles for a new engine. haha

the toyota D4D is a sweet engine and a grey market one to boot. I'd have to go to mexico to get one though because they aren't offered in the states or canada. I'm not sure how that would go with customs.
