do i really need a lift???

I just bought a 2012 taco dcsb, with trd offroad, i like to go off roading but i dont want a bunch of trail rash on my truck. Do i really need a lift??? I do truck route driving sometimes and i havent had any problems. I am also adding an ARE truck topper to my truck, would the added weight of the shell cx topper require support"???

The topper will lower the back some obviously, but shouldn't be ridiculous.

If you want to run bigger tires, then I would lift it a little. If not, it's really up to your personal preference.

I don't know the weight of the ARE shells, but my leer shell made the back sag a little. I did the TSB and it took care of that issue though. Do the '12's have the 3 or 4 leaf pack?

 

You might get some sagging from the cap , but as for lift , no .

 

If you're actually going to wheel it, yes.

If you're going to drive around on dirt roads in the woods and call that wheeling, no.

You don't need a lift. Maybe get a helper spring for the rear if the topper add's too much weight. Enjoy the new pickup

 

You don't need one, but I know you want one. Lifted my 12 a month after I got it for a meaner stance w/ bigger tires and to have some trail fun in good ol flat ass FL. But mainly for meaner stance though.

Many people want lifts.

It depends on what you want to do versus how much you have to do it.

my .02 - if you get the off road bug, what you really need is good tires and some recovery gear- lift can come at a much later date (if at all)

I actually NEED a lift for all the offroading I do. I have caused damage because info not has a lift.

Basically I see it this way. If you go out wheeling, and skid the bottom of your truck on stuff, get skid plates. If your tires aren't doing the job, get better tires. If you get high centered/truck gets stuck because it is literally too low, get a lift. Personally I hate big lifts. Not my thing at ALL. If you don't need it, don't get it.


I'm going with as little lift as I can. Im getting adjustable fox cool overs for tr front so I can fine tune the suspension height, so I ride high enough to have exceptional ground clearance. Yet I want to keep the COG low. I like them my offroad rigs to be very stable and solid. I hate that tippy feeling. I'm also going to be rolling on 35's...doin need to barely clear those.

 

Anyhow, just go.

If you find yourself high-centered, dragging the frame a lot, dragging the hitch through the dirt, or with insufficient clearance to get the front bumper up over the rocks on the trail - time to think about investing in an off-road suspension, tires, and recovery gear.

 

If you need improved breakover angle and departure angle, a levelling kit won't really do the job.

 

Just kind of a compromise.
