    this ^^^

    my new place has a 6 foot soaking tub & a 3.5 foot x 7 foot walk in shower.

    btw,

    I stick with plywood....we run it horizontal and FL code required blocking at all horizontal joints between studs. I also use Treated plywood for the bottom run.

    before ply, I run 12" black poly attached to the bottom of the stud wall...6" up/down at the foundation joint. this protects the bottom of the stud wall, should any moisture get to the bottom edge of the plywood at the bottom of the wall.

    We also stand & plumb all walls prior to plywood sheathing. And, there is a crap load of Simpson steel straps/clips per FL code. Plus 5/8" threaded rods verticle on all corners and at each opening and every 60" perimeter...bolted to the foundation (slab or girder) and bolted through the top plate with a 2" sq washer and nut.

    I also use real wood for exterior trim. we have KDAT (kiln dried after treated) it is like cabinet grade material and looks awesome.

    all trim is screwed, not nailed. We also use ONLY galvanized nails...and 3/4" 6 ply for roof sheathing. Also, treated lumber for all fascia/soffit framing...even the truss "tails" are treated. all #2 pine.

    another pointer for the OP: install wood blocking for towel bars. paper holders, mirrors, grab bars, etc...

    But, WTF do I know...I've only been doing it for 40 years. :D

    My shower won't be quite that big. But I am planning on one of those multiple nozzle deals.

    It's amazing at all of the Hurricane "fortifications" in the building codes down there. I kinda wish they would add some of those here with all the tornadoes we get. My parents live in Jax and when their house was being built, I was amazed at all of the code requirements for hurricanes (and they're 23 miles inland from the ocean. Not to mention it took 8 months to build their house. Mine was built in less than 90 days. Larry, Are you putting a lanai on your new house. My parents house has one and they love it, it's sorta built into the house with only one screened wall exposed to the outside.

    OP and OZ, are metal roofs common up in BC?

    I agree on the seperate tub and shower, however put a big shower bc my seperate shower is like a phone booth (~33x~30), I hate it so I'm going to tear out the garden tub and put a shower in its place to have a bigger shower (60"x36"). I've used the tub maybe 4-5 times in the last 4 years.

    The details Larry listed for the wind loading in his area are very close to what we do for seismic loading here.

    @Larry

    With all the panel edges blocked on the exterior walls , is there any concern or provision for trapped moisture inside the wall cavity ?

    @Macgyver

    Yes , metal roofs are common , as are asphalt

    Metal roofs are surprisingly common up here. Low maintenance, jut have to watch you don't get caught in the avalanche of snow that can slide off in the winter.

    Ever had any dealings with ikea for kitchens? I would have thought to stay away but several people have told me thy are quality cabinets, especially for the price.

    I know a few people who have installed their cabinets and they're actually halfway decent cabinets, some even have solid wood doors and drawer fronts. The carcasses are particle board...but so are the cabinets in my kitchen. Mine are particle board carcasses w/ maple veneer. Solid Maple face frames, doors, and drawer fronts.

    I want a metal roof on my next house, asphalt shingles don't hold up too well to the hail storms we get here.

    Knowing ikea I'd venture to guess they are particle board cabinets, which are OK, but they might have plywood options. Ideally if you can spend for it, plywood would be best.

    Edit: Oh yeah and the faces like macgyver said, should be a solid wood.

    Same here.

    Look into Hertco cabinets

    Hertco.com

    I've used them quite a bit , I order them through my local Slegg Lumber , but you might be able to order directly .

    That's what I'd heard. Good hardware was the other comment. Seems like with the savings ( assuming particle board cabinets anyways) you could spend additional elsewhere. I.e. countertops.

    So many different choices for countertops out there. Different stones, corian, arborite...
