Sundown SD-2 Series question

Anyone out there own a sundown sd-2 subwoofer? link

My question is for people with knowlege of or experience with these subwoofers being used in a box like this in the Double Cab Tacoma.

I'm wondering if I need to contact supercrewsound and ask them to make the box smaller because of the excursion of this subwoofer. I know I'll have to remove the hard plastic back off of the seat, but will that be enough? Will this subwoofer (looking at a 10") be knocking itself against the wiring of the rear drivers side seat?

FYI...The subwoofer fits in the box. It gets installed tomorrow and I'll be able to see if it's going to be hitting the back of my seat or not because of the rediculous excursion potential.

Plenty of room, if anyone wants to get in on sundown, the sd-2 works just fine. Be prepared to break the sub in as it's super tight from the manufacturer. I only have my amp gains at about 60% but it sounds pretty good

 

Looks good man. I have a Sundown SA-10 in my 12 AC and it sounds awesome and hits hard as hell. Definitely agree with you about breaking them in, I think mine is still in the break in phase and I've had it for almost a month. I have it wired to a sundown Saz-1000 amp and it takes it like a champ at 1ohm.

What amp are you running?

 

I'm running an alpine mrx-m50 @ 2ohm which is 500+ watts. It was kind of an impulse buy. I'd love to get one of those sundown amps, I've become a fan of the whole sundown line-up. I even talked to one of the owners of sundown on facebook (Jacob) to try and figure out if this thing would fit behind my seat and he was very helpful.

 

I'm interested in what you think of this sub. I have pretty much the same amp as you do, and I'd like to get your impressions of how it works. I think I even have the same sub box. What's it sound like, if you can describe it? Does it hit hard, give you a little punch? Or is it any better than any other sub? Thanks for your answers.

 

I haven't had a lot of experience as of late. I haven't had a system in any vehicle i've owned since probably 2002 or so. The box is the one that I linked in the original post. The subwoofer sounds pretty good for 60ish hz, but the lows are really missing. I'm hoping as the sub breaks in a bit more, that I'll be able to turn up the gains, and some of the bass boost and it'll make a bigger difference. It shakes your shirt and makes your ears itch a bit, but nothing like the systems I had when I was younger that would really mess up your vision . I really would like to hear a 1 10" sub in another truck before I could really recommend it. I know people out there really love the sundown products, so I'm betting my 10" sub is better than most 10's.

 

Yeah, I know what you mean about systems past. Had two 15"s with 1500w in an old Hyundai. Couldn't see half the time. Right now I'm rocking a JL W1v2, and it's okay, but there's probably better out there. I've never really heard of Sundown, but I've read a bit on them, and they seem to be really popular. Maybe yours needs to break-in, so I'd be interested in some longer term results. Thanks for the input.

That guy has 2 SD-2 10's...his appears to sound better than mine. Probably a box issue for me.

 

Interesting vid. The excursion is almost stupid on these. I do have the same box as you, did you seal it up as well. I put a load of silicone on the speaker cup, cut the carpet from around the mounting hole as well. I've got maybe 3 handfuls of stuffing spread out in the box as well. Doing that, I get some good sound out of the JL I have, but it's got nothing on these Sundowns for excursion. I think the box in the video is vented too, that may have something to do with the excursion he's getting too. Might even be the amp. How do you have it set up? I would probably get the D4 version, and wire it up for a 2-ohm final load, to get the most out of the amp.

 

I have the D4 sub wired to 2 ohm. Mine gets the same amount of excursion. I was worried there wouldn't be room and the sub would be beating itself apart on the back of the seat, but there is plenty of room. I've been considering putting some polyfill in the box to see if it affects the lows.

 

I'm really choked right now about this sub. To get it across the border, and in my truck, would cost me around $300. That's taking into consideration a purchase price of only $150 online. Crazy! But I like the excursion, and the support that is provided by the company. I'm torn, and unsure of what to do. And now, you're saying you may be having trouble with the deep lows, I'm just so unsure. I may stick with my original choices on this, between the JL W3 and the Alpine Type R.

 

I wish I could hear this sub next to the alpine type r. $150 dollars for shipping to calgary? ouch

I love the fact that this sub can take whatever wattage I throw at it. Search for Sundown SD-2 videos on youtube and you'll see the "prototype abuse" videos. That's really what sold it for me. I think my amp might be the problem for my lows not being as good as i'd like.

Dont need to speak that language to understand that this subwoofer is getting great lows in this video. I think there may be a filter turned on my amp thats cutting the low freq's out...I'll have to go test some things with my setup. 142db at 25 hz with two 10's seems pretty badass.

 

Yeah $150 shipping. We have to put up with actual shipping cost, duty, sales tax and a brokerage fee from the shipper. Only way for me to get around it is to ship to the border, and drive the 3 hours each way, to avoid it. That's not worth it either.

I was wondering about the amp. With the torture tests, they are putting around 1000w into the woofer. And the amp you and I have, would only put 500w max into it. I think they may have under-rated the power handling on the Sundown subs. It's still tempting, but I have to consider more than likely upgrading the amp down the road too.

Gahh! Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in. I thought I wanted a small system, just enough to give me a little kick. And now I'm already thinking upgrades. It never ends.

 

My amp does 500RMS at 2ohm. My amp came with test results that showed 589 watts at 2ohm mono. I read that it actually gets up to 900 peak watts at 2 ohm mono. My gains are turned down so far because I want to break this subwoofer in. After 20 hours of playtime or so, i'll turn the gains up and really see what it can do.

 

Please do. Because I'm considering a JL W3, which is $280 here, but for the extra $20, if this thing really rocks, I'll pay the brown guy the extra brokerage for a killer sub.

 

How much does it cost from the dealer? I see there is a sundown audio dealer there in Calgary..."Smart Audio Sound Solutions". Also, what amp do you have?

 

The dealer here is only a distributor. He doesn't sell to individuals. I'd have to set up a group buy. I was going to buy from online, and have it shipped to me, thus UPS getting a bunch of my money for brokerage of a product that should be duty free, as it's made in the US.

As for the amp, I have the MRP-500, which is a step down in some functionality from yours. My spec sheet says 537w at 2ohms RMS, so not too bad. I think your amp has a selectable sub-sonic filter on it, and the ability to add a remote gain knob. Those are the only differences I can see between the two.

 

Might want to ask the vendor if they'd do USPS to you instead of UPS, or is the sub packaging too big for USPS to Canada?
