LOL! We've got a pretty big walk in shower and it was kind of awkward for me when my father in law suggested we put in two heads and faucets so my wife and I can shower together...:anonymous:We did it though, definitely worth it.

I've been doing all kinds of research on IKEA kitchens including going to an IKEA and putting hands on the exact cabinets we are getting, and from what I've seen/heard they are a very high quality for the price you pay. Plus, in March and April every year they have some type of kitchen sale, this year it's 10% off $3500 of cabinets or 20% off $4500 or more of kitchen cabinets. That's HUGE. Our cabinets will be ~$6100, after the discount they are $4880. Add that to the fact they are already a good deal, I can assemble and install myself, and I am saving ~$7-8,000 from what a local shop quoted me.

Yes it's apples to apples, the cabinet frames are particle board at the local shop and IKEA with solid wood drawers.

My home will probably take 8-9 months to complete...more to complete the guest cottage and shop.

The beach house I built took over a year, but much of that was the pilings and floor/girder system.

Yes, our code is off the hook. most of it is unnecessary and politically driven.

and yes on the lanai, although the architecture of my house...it probably would be considered more of a covered porch. (finished up the siding there today)

I also agree on the shower/tub deal. It's why I made my shower over-sized. and it's more a room with a glass door and window over the tub...not an "enclosure" of glass. It also has its own light and exhaust fan in the shower.

The tub is for the ladies. I'll never get in it...unless invited, and then it's worth the effort. :D

    agree'd

I went w/ soft close drawers & doors...it's a minimum upgrade and worth every penny.

We went with Cardell Cabinets...all wood...dovetail drawers...etc...with bead board doors, in white.

We has Medallion in the last home, they are quality as well.

A pointer for OP...we got "mirror moulding" that matches the cab door stiles (frames)...in loose lengths, it will be cut and mirror glass installed and hung over vanities. it is a very sweet finished look.

Soft close doors and drawers are a must.

We were toying width the idea of some open cabinets or just helping above the counter. Harder to get a finished look though.

You could do glass panels in some of the doors to make them feel a little more open.

Or even (not sure what you'd call it) something like above the sink here, with the flatware open.

Ya I like that open look. I was a bit worried about keeping glass clean. But being up high I it should really be a problem.

Frosted or other type of obscured glass with lighting inside the cabinet is a nice effect

This ^^^ You still get that back-lit effect but at the same time you can hide your "normal" dishes.

Did a lot of that at the Kitchen firmed I worked at on the east coast. Great way to illuminate the cabinets themselves and give the area some low level lighting, similar to undercabinet lights.
