yep, ..it seems like the negative stuff (gutrot, entitlement mentality, laziness, etc..) grabs the spotlight more often than the go-getters... i always like seeing young folk (including on this forum) demonstrate initative and wish them all success...

Here's a real world situation from someone I know very well.

Mother of two has a job at Home Depot. Has never been written up and over the 8 year career has climbed to mid management making almost $20.00 /hour. Also, 3 out of the last 5 years has received the maximum raise allowable based off of review scores.

New manager comes to town, economy is tanking ... Upper Home Depot management decide they need to cut costs and decide the best way to do this is fire mid/upper managers who make north of $18.00. At the store this person works at she is one of 5 people over the next 6 months who get fired and replaced with lower paid lesser experienced employees.

This mother of two now has to find a job in this market that allows to make the money she needs to pay for childcare and also sustain herself. Every job she interviews for is offering 1/2 of what she made at Home Depot. Does she take the job and lose her house? car? While on unemployment you don't have to take any job offering 25% or more less that what you previously earned.

Luckily this woman is my wife and her hudsband makes enough money for her to not need to work. But you know what? She's claiming the fucking unemployment because she is ENTITLED to it. Period. She'll be a stay at home mom for a few months and see where the economy takes us. If she was single nothing changes here exepct her being forced to take a shitty job and then her and her children suffer. She has an AMAZING work ethic ... work ethic had nothing to do with this decision.

Fuck you guys and your blanket ignorant statements. Especially you young pricks all hot and heavy on your work ethic. LOL. Sometimes work ethic doesn't mean shit and the real world wins out.

Yes, I let this rile me up a bit. Go ahead and post your "U mad bro" pics, I am mad. Mad at people with uneducated ignorant opinions.

Yup I split the cost of my Tacoma with my pops and I've already payed him $8000 since august, and for the benefits, there really aren't any I think cause the jobs are pretty much the lowest positions

Just a bunch of old crap
I thought if you were fired with cause, that you wouldn't be eligible for unemployment benefits. They may start paying him, but I wouldn't be surprised if they revoked it and he owed it back. They're not friendly about taking it back, either.

I had a friend who would go run to the gym for an hour near the end of the day and not clock out. He would come back and work for a bit, then go home. Ends up he was doing it for a few months, and someone finally ratted him out and he got fired. He filed for unemployment, started getting checks, and then they came back and revoked it. Now he owes a couple grand that he didn't have because he had no job to pay it back.

Getting terminated for drinking actually on the job is cause for termination. Being drunk and coming into work is a different situation, and they treat it differently (usually giving you chances to go to rehab, etc.)

I think karma will bite this guy in the dick and he'll be alot worse off than you think. Give it a little time to play out, and enjoy the front seat to the show.

was in between jobs for a month and a half last year. was on unemployment for a week until i was hired. all i have to say is unemployment is awesome, me and my buddy would be mtn biking all day and be like ahhh just another day at the office.
i was making more on money unemployment than some of my friends working full time. the problem is if you abuse it/stay on it too long, complanies will know and you will have a hard time getting a job.

unemployment is too awesome, no one wants to go back to work

Sometimes firefighters make the best fire lighters.

I'm just wanting to post something for people to take a step back from assumptions and look at a scenario that happens all the time.

My wife spent several months looking for a job and was willing to take $5.00 less /hour to work. More if they would work with scheduling issues. She, we, have both worked our assess off since we were 16.

I want to make a clear line in the sand between lazy people cheating the system, and hard working people who have fallen on hard times. Don't cast them all into the same pot.

First of all, I believe that if her lifestyle is not over the top, she should be able to collect in order to sustain her life as she had it, REGARDLESS if she is married and has a husband to help support her. Working at half the previous income is doable IF she did not have to pay for childcare, which is VERY expensive - might as well stay home and raise your kids yourself, because you are only working to pay someone else to raise your kids!

It's very insulting to be working at a place so long, worked your way up and they put you to the curb as if you don't matter. That is why sometimes a union job is good. Not wanting to go back and forth about unions and such, and I won't bring it up again, it's just that I could have been there if not for my position in the union job I have. I am "protected" so far. *crosses fingers*

Hoping that she will able to go back into a job with her skills as management in a company that is not going to downsize so quickly.

agreed. i think for the most part folks are just venting about abuses... one thing to emphasizeas a generality to the topic at hand, is the importance of making that dollar, and trying to pack some away in savings (maintain that "rainy day fund").. one of the contributions to the slump is folks borrowing too much, not saving enough ;)

I have never collected unemployment, and I would be too scared to. I'm afraid would feel stagnant.

My young neighbor has always on some kind of assistance for the past 13 years (three kids, three different fathers, no help) and my kids (when they were little) have asked why she gets money for not working and I have to leave them every morning to go MAKE money. Now they that they are older see how she is taking advantage of the system and have vowed never to be like her. They don't like the idea of other families having to support her with tax money when she is healthy and strong enough to work for herself or can ask the fathers for child support.

I volunteered to go to Afghanistan and when I got back from that deployment I had to find a job. So, while applying and interviewing I collected UI. I then took a job making the same as I made on UI. Did I rate that or should I have just gone without any income because only turds collect what they pay in to for years? I am bringing this up because yes there are shit bags that take advantage of benefits. But, you can't lump everyone in the same boat.

Alright buddy. I understand you getting a little fired up reading all these posts and thinking that we think your wife is lumped into that group of lazy, no good collecting people. She's not. Clearly she's worked hard all her life and fell upon hard times. Nothing wrong with that. That being said, I just have some questions. In no way I am I trying to attack you or come at you or her, I'm just curious. Why is she collecting when you make enough money to support her not working? It'd make sense if she couldn't find a job but you said all the jobs she's been offered are at least half of what she made at Home Depot. So my question is why can't she get a job that pays $10 if you can support the family already without her working? Wouldn't anything be beneficial to you guys at that point? It's just not becoming clear to me as to why she'd choose unemployment over having an actual job? I do understand though coming from $20 to half of that would suck and wouldnt feel good but personally I'd rather then and say I have a job over the government giving me money. But I do also see her wanting to take a step back for a couple months and get shit done around the house and be the kids etc. whilst still bringing in some money. Nothing wrong with that either I suppose... JUst food for though.

Ermm....Huh. Well I guess I missed that part. You got a point there, Dhawk. I can see if she had to pay for childcare but if she doesn't NEED to work then staying home with the kids might be the best choice...

Have you ever tried to interview for multiple career jobs while working full time? How would it make sense to take a job that would restrict your future and kid's future just because you would "feel bad". It is there for a reason, she paid into it, she can use it. If you crashed your truck would you feel bad for using insurance to pay for the repairs?

Just remember, there is a difference between Welfare and Unemployment Insurance.

She wants to work, and/but if she went back to work we would have to put the kids back in full time day care which cost about $1,500+ month. We were paying $1,600 before. The kids were in daycare when she was working at Depot which her wage covered and then some. If she went back to work for less than $15.00ish it wouldn't make sense financially. That's the point. The kids have to go somewhere if she goes back to work full time. They are 3.5 and 1.5.

Why is she collecting now? Because, she and I paid into unemployment for a combined 30 years are she is ENTITLED to take it. There has been no decision on whether or not she is going to stay home for good. She is still looking for a job and if someone gets close, she'll take it. She would rather work than stay home.

The point of my post was to get people to think about this scenario if either A) she wasn't married or B) her husband did not make enough to support the family.

I agree man 100%. I am making less working than on UI. 50miles round trip with gas cuts $10hr down even more. Most people just can't understand why you would do it, but they are typically still living at home with mom and dad. If I wasn't married and had saved from deploying I would have been screwed because the Police job that I was working on got cut due to budget cuts.

Still wondering if I can get the seal of approval from the OP...
