For those that like the ham radio setup next to the shifter, it is a very easy install. I got the idea from Special K as well. You just cut the bottom out and drop it in. Even though it is friction fit, it is solid as hell.

Unfortunately the Hole-in-the-Wall group sites are booked. Someone else booked them for 150 people. We'll just need to use the regular campsites that are first come first serve. They said we can only have 2 trucks per site and I know they were a little upset last year when we had 5 or 6 trucks in one spot. I'm sure we can get 3-4 trucks per spot without being told anything like we have in the past.

Each site is $12 a night so you'll split that with the amount of trucks in each site. Since we have a large group, I think one bundle of firewood per truck will be plenty for two nights but feel free to bring more if you have it.

We'll have one designated campsite for the fire. If anyone is taking their kids like I am, I prefer to have the campfire at that campsite. This way, when the kids fall asleep, the parents won't have to leave the fire. They can put the kids to sleep in the tents and still party while keeping an eye on them. Don't worry, my kids sleep through all noises so we don't have noise restrictions.

Important note: Since this is a family friendly trip where wives, children and law enforcement are invited, please keep the weed at home this weekend.

Can someone exaplain the Ham license requirements? I think several people might find this info handy. I plan on getting my radio tomorrow. (if I can w/out a license)Should I be concerned about a license just for what we need these radios for? What are the penalties of not having a license and who is really watching? Thanks

    +1 for an explanation.

I ran this past my only HAM certified buddy, who said we probably wouldn't have an issue out in the desert. BUT an operator could triangulate your signal in seconds and send out a ranger or officer to give you a ticket.

the easiest way to tell someone is unlicensed? they won't be using a call-sign

I think most of us do not have a license yet but there are many resources for practicing the test. Test dates are set in your local area. Many guys study the week before the test and ace it. I hear it's very easy. If the ham nerds hear you talking without a call sign, they'll get upset. Blah blah blah.

    Useful sites.

I told the Ham Outlet here what my intentions were and he told me that I didn't need a license for my use.

They do offer classes at the shop, there are quite a few online classes offered through sites also.

I have a license but for the frequencies we're using we don't need one. You also don't need one to purchase a radio. I have all the qustions with answers if anybody wants them for study purposes. Just pm your email and ill send them to you. A lot of the employees at ham radio outlet are part of clubs that are authorized to give the test.

Also if I remember, technically you don't have to announce your call sign. I don't even remember mine.

Just went by Ham Radio Outlet and picked up the Kenwood TM-281A that Lembowski and Eddie run. Guy at HRO had nothing but the best things to say about this paticular unit for off road use and the monting location in the center console. $230 and some change with antenna. Also gave me the instructions for the diode removal to get the race frequencies.

Go out and buy the tinniest needle nose's you can and the diode is a breeze to remove.
