Just bought my first Truck:1999 Tacoma Extra Cab 4x4

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and to trucks. This is my first real truck. I had a 68' Ford F-100 that I got for free and used to beat around the property when I was younger.

So I was looking for my first new truck, I saved for awhile, and finally bought a 1999 Tacoma 4x4 With the Extra Cab and the 4cyl. She's pretty much all stock besides load levelers in the rear, and has 160k. Runs perfect, I paid $4500.

I love to wheel, and decided on a toyota after seeing nearly stock rigs at the local spots doin Work!

My plans for this truck are:

3 inch Tuff country lift
ARB Bull Bar
Some kind of heavy duty rear bumper with D-ring mounts(suggestions?)
Rear Locker
32's or 33's if they fit
Black Steelies

And that's it for now. When I have more money maybe a Fabtech 6".

My question is, what kind of tire clearance will I get with the 3" lift?

And any suggestions on a rear bumper?

nice rig man, are you set on tuff country lift? There are a few others that may suit you better

 

Welome to the forum! As for ground clearance, you're looking at the same with the 3" as the 6", since a diff drop is mandatory once you get beyond 3. The 33s will fit with anything more than a 2" lift. As for the bumper, you're into the realm of custom fab, so there are tons of routes to go there. Maybe someone else has more info for you.

 

check out ARB bumpers, not experience with first gens but a lot of ppl LOVE them on 2nd gens

I've seen a few nice bumpers! But not many with D-ring mounts.

 

definitely not set on it,

I just saw the price of $300 and it seemed reasonable.

Do you have a better suggestion I'm open to anything really!

I don't know about this lift opinion you guys are giving this cat but Arizonatea, I've got a 2000 v6 ext cab 4x4 with a 3" fabtech adjustable coilover system with 2" add-a-leafs in the rear. I ALSO have a fabtech 3" body lift. I'm running 33x12.50R15's and I rub SOMETIMES while my truck is bouncing at full turn. I don't know if you plan on getting 33x10.50's or what, but they might be okay with a 2-3 inch lift, but I would recommend you get at least 4" higher on your truck. Just my opinion though fellas. If I had just a 2" lift on my truck, I would guarantee my tires would rub nonstop. 1st generation tacoma fenderwells are just too restricted for larger tires with a small lift. But do what you want.

 

Definitely want 33's but if I have to run 32's I can manage.

I was looking at the tuff country 5" lift, but it said it won't fit the 4 cyl. Why is that?

 

Sweet, bought my first truck a few months ago, also gold. Wasn't my first choice of color but it's really grown on me. Hides the dirt really well.

arizonatea, I don't know why it won't fit on your 4 banger, but how much are you planning on spending? I bought my fabtech 3" susp lift from national tire and wheel for 600 bucks.

 

arizonatea... I know you want 33's, but what width are planning on getting? you might be able to have a 2-3" lift with 33x10.50's without any major rubbing, but I don't know... iv'e always ran 33x12.50's.

 

Congrats on your new purchase. I'm jelous of the prices you west coast guys get on those trucks. Around here, The last 97 xcab 4-cyl 4wd with 160k I watched go for $8200.

I just picked up my first Tacoma last week too (99 TRD X-cab 4wd). I'm also lookin to run 33's ~ But I'm flexiable. I just bought a used front 3" spacer lift for $50 and am planning to give that a try first. I can level the rear myself.


On lift heights, I've not found exactly what will & will not rub. Wheels off set will have some effect on tire rub. Less back spacing places the wheel further out and brings it back in the wheel well further when you turn.

I figure if I'm +3 and still rub I'll go with the 32's or get a 1" body lift.

 

Yeah i was planning on running 33x10.50's,

Im don't wanna spend more than $500 on my first lift.

Eventually I'll man up and drop some cash on a 6" Fabtech.

You can run 33's as long as your wheel BS is 4" or less, youll rub with the stock wheels on full turns and you have to ditch the front mudflaps
