Left wheel bearing was bad. Truck is quiet as a dream. Except for the rumble of AT tires.

thx for the write up i know its old but it was the most helpful one on this site because the pictures ,i jus did both my wheel bearings myself and got a alignment from toyota, trucks pretty damn smooth now/drives strait and i saved myself just under a $1000 by buying parts from autoshops and wrenching myself thx again!

Just replaced the passenger side wheel bearing yesterday - this was a good refresher course. Thanks!

    Just a few ideas:
    1. If your rotor will not come off easy: Look at the rotor, you will see two threaded holes between the studs. ( one on each side of the center), you can thread two bolts into those holes and just tighten them evenly to remove the rotor.
    2. If the hub will not come out easy: As you remove the (4) 17mm bolts, put a small piece of metal (I used another wrench) between the bolt you are removing and the backside of a stud. This will allow you to use the bolts to push the hub out for you.
    3. If the axle bolt is tight: You should loosen the axle bolt before removing the caliper. You can side a screwdriver into the slots on the rotor to keep the rotor/axle from spinning while you loosen the bolt. The screwdriver will push against the caliper.
These are ideas I used to remove my bearings/axles. These may not be excepted practices by all, but I found the info helpful.

And does anybody know the exact torque specs of cv nut when u have to put it back on? I jus tightened mine up but was told if i did it to tight i will be shortening the bearings life by because there will be friction against hub and bearing

Sooo..... I've got an '05 with 114k miles. I've been told I need to replace my bearings in both front wheels. Been told I might need to replace the hubs as well, but the dealership said they wouldnt be able to tell me till they got it apart. If its just the bearings I need replaced they said it would be $909.67 if the hubs need replacing as well, add $180 for each side....

They are crazy! I have 2 friends that have never done a hub / betting replacement on a Toyota, but feel they know enough for the 3 of us to get it done.

I need to know before I start and get it half way apart what all am I going to need tools wise, and while im in there should I go ahead and replace anything else??

35 mm socket, probably an impact, pliers, screw drivers, press and some sort of plates to press the hub from the bearing, torque wrench, basic socket set.
