I did my whole rear bumper with battery still attached, but I had the ground attached at the rear close to where I was. I would say if your welding in the front of the truck might as well be safe and disconnect though

I have heard that as well, but I built the front bumper, fixed motor mounts, installed secondary hoops, boxed the rear, moved hitch and welded it to frame and built rear bumper all with the battery connected. Better safe than sorry but I always forget while working and remember after.

Just about to sell an almost new Lincoln kit. It's this one.
    http://m.northerntool.com/northerntool/product/detail.do?itemId=167740

Got it for using on a friends truck. He didn't have 220v and this little guy worked great for small jobs.

Now the project is done and I don't need it. Have a expensive Miller in my shop.

Just throwing this out there, for anything structural and anything .120 (1/8") or thicker don't use a 120 volt.

I have the old miller 185 thats only 220, love it. That thing is a work horse. I've ran the whole length of trailing arms in one pass with it flinching.

Mostly agree. I would never do a full bed cage with a 120v, but you can weld over 1/8 for small jobs no problem. We did plenty of 3/16 and a bit of 1/4 multi pass.

Just depends on expectations and usage. Its hard to justify spending 1k and up on a nice 220v welder that is not used very much.

Totally agree with you, for small stuff a 120v is fine. Suspension and cage I wouldn't use one though. You can find miller 175s used for the $500 range though and they are 220v

For reference this truck was built 100% with a miller 175 and has seen more racing than most other 1400 trucks combined

    To much to list!
If you want a welder that can do 110 and 220v only currect welder that I know of is the Miller 211. That's what I bought. I love it. But the older machines that would both 110 and 220 was called a DVI and DVI2 if I remember correctly. But the DVI machines are big in size
