Tonneau cover

I just got my tonneau cover (access limited Ed)..
How long did it take to install it???
I remember installing it on my Dakota, and had to cut some of my bedliner near the cab, so that it would fit, and it took me awhile.
Just wanted to know how long it takes for a Tacoma or any special adaptations I might have to do???
Also, it's about 35 degrees where I am right now...probably should wait til it gets a little warmer??

took me roughly an 45minuts.

I have no power tools so it took extra time with socket and wrechet

 

Does instructions mentioned "should be over 60 degrees" or something like that???? Do you remember???
I don't want to crack open the box til I'm ready

 

not that I remember. I installed mine when it was 55 here.
The directions kind of suck, but it's pretty easy to figure out. Get your brother/sister/mom/dad to help you hold the rails. It'll make your life 1000 times easier.

I don't know how you're going to reproduce the weather strip in the front of the bed. It's a added bonus with the access roll up.

 

Trust me...it's easy! Be careful getting the existing rail bolts out - some have stripped them. Mine came out with out any trouble at all. Use the longer bolts and the spacers that are provided and put everything back together with the tonneau rails behind the bed rails. Tighten it down but don't over do it.

The cover goes on real easily but make sure the little clips are sitting on top of the cover when you are done. I had to remove and reinstall the cover to make that right (cost an extra 5 min).

The instructions aren't that great but you can watch the video on their website and that makes it REAL easy!

Only basic tools are required.

Both the Limited Edition and the Roll-Up come with the weatherstripping in the front.

 

what do you mean reproduce the weatherstrip???
I've got the limited edition, should have the weather strip??? or not???

 

from what i was told the LE didn't come with it.

 

The LE is the top-line model. It DEFINITELY has the weatherstripping. The Roll-Up also has the WS but does not have the dual-latching system on the rear (unnecessary IMO). I usually do not lock the passenger side but it's right there if you need to. The LE has one latch in the middle that hits both sides.

Other than the dual latching system, they are identical.


You'll be very happy with this cover. It looks great!

Did you work with Luke at Truck Alterations? He directed me away from the LE because I informed him that was not a necessary feature for me. I was very pleased with his advice and recommendations. I knew nothing about Tonneaus and the features they had.

Don't sweat it...you have a top-of-the-line model. Also, if you did get it through TA, you paid A LOT LESS than other vendors are selling them for. I got the Roll-Up for $340 and the LE was $380. I also could have gotten the Literider for $280 but it does not have the weatherstripping.

 

It took me about 1.5 hours because I did it by myself and had to a juggling act with the bolts, spacers, and rails.

It can be purchased separately and it isn't an "added bonus" because you pay for it, hence the reason you paid a lot more than the $285 shipped that I paid for my Literider.

 

Ok guys...

Access Ltd. includes element (front bulkhead) seal, trailseal tailgate seal and quick release latching system.

Access rollup includes the element seal only. No tailgate seal and no quick release latching system...

 

I didn't know about the tailgate seal. What is that anyway?

You can see in the picture above that it seals pretty tight on the tailgate. I don't see how water could possibly get in there. If it did, it would just run down the tailgate and out the bottom.

what did you use to cut the bedliner? I just bought an 08 doublecab TRD off-road, and I want to buy a tonneau cover & understand i'll have to cut the bedliner since it goes over the edges of the bed.
recommendation for a cover? any help would be appreciated.

 

No cutting what-so-ever. The only tool you need to install the Access on the Tacoma is a ratchet wrench with various bits (socket, philips and allen). Nothing else to do the entire job.

Maybe a beer but you'll only get through one before you're done installing it.

 

Really? I was told since the liner goes over the edges, i'd need to cut into the liner.
Which brand/model tonneau cover are you referring to? If i can install without cutting anything, that'd be great.

 

Since these might help the OP as well...

Notice the snow in the bed...I did it when it was cold outside! Didn't cause any trouble besides cold hands.

Again, NO CUTTING FOR ANY OF THE ACCESS MODELS ON THE 05+ TACOMA!!!

Here is the tailgate side. Hard to tell but the cover rail simply installs BEHIND the existing cleat rail. Remove the cleat rail, match up the supplied cover rail and reinstall the cleat rail.

 

I just removed my LE from my 06 and reinstalled it on my 09. Took my roughly an hour. A second set of hands is really nice to have. You can do it alone but have someone hold the rails straight while you get the screws started. I think you'll need a number 4 Allen wrench.

One more heads up. If you ever EVER want to take that cover off to replace or swap out, go get stainless steel bolts. The ones that come with the kit will rust in place. Save yourself the trouble wait till it's warmer and get better bolts.

 

It's a moulding that surrounds the entire tailgate. Honestly, unless you absolutely must have the bed 100% dry, I don't see a real need for it. I haven't seen any water in my bed coming from the tailgate. The element seal is much more useful, IMO. But even that, if you have a bed mat the water will run down the front bed wall and under the bed mat. That's exactly my experience. My bed mat has been completely dry every time.
