looking for a 9mm but unsure on which to pick

well as it says im looking for a 9mm.

uses:
protection.
for some rec shooting.
something just to have around in case.

this will be the first handgun i will have, already have a savage 30-6
but looking for mainly under $400 used or new doesnt matter.

any good brands/model you would suggest?

Sig is outta the question for $400. But the best handgun I have ever fired is a Sig P226.

glock (numbering system i can never make sense of...), S&W M&P9/M&P9c, springfield XD/XDm, FNH, Ruger SR9/SR9c, SIG P220, Beretta PX4, etc...

what do you like? striker fired? hammer single/double action? safety or no safety?

 

safety yes, and double action.

 

I'd recommend Glock. Easy to handle and take care of. Accurate enough. Find parts just about anywhere too.

 

basically you'll get a boatload of answers since everyone has their own likes/dislikes . your best bet is to handle some in the shop (better yet on a range) - w/ a handgun the "fit" is most important, so that is a personal thing...

but to give you a place to start (i'll skip my speil about M&Ps, which i like because they don't have a safety), ...i handled a beretta PX4 compact 9mm a month or two ago - it was very very nice, ...but i didn't like the thumb safety (but it sounds like you're looking for one w/ a safety, so..)... springfields models don't have thumb safeties, but have a grip safety that is actuated when gripping the gun, so you may like that feature...

 

I recommend going to your local range and renting handguns you're interested in buying to see how they shoot.

Like stated above, "fit" is most important. Even if it comes highly recommended, you're not going to like it if it's not comfortable to shoot to you.

So, xd/xdm, glock 17 &19, buckmark, and sig 229 (way out of your price range but totally worth it)

Springfield XD or Smith & Wesson have a better grip IMO than a Glock. You really need to hold a few to make the best decision. Unless you plan on burying your handgun in sand. In that case get a Glock

XD Essentials Package can be had for around $400 brand new. IMO better than buying Used. Love my XD. As others have stated its a matter of fit. Renting them at the range IMHO is a waste of time unless you have prior hand gun experience. If you are completely new to handgun shooting you will shoot everything very badly. Just go to the gun store and hold each in your hand and see how the feel.

What I like about Glock for a first handgun is that it will eat even the cheapest ammo out there. For most of us, that makes it easier to shoot more. Your defense handgun should be one that you shoot A LOT, because no matter how much Call of Duty you play, if the day comes when life depends on your use of a pistol you haven't practiced with, you are probably fucked.

Pick your favorite model from the above manufacturers and you'll be OK. Stay away from the $100 hi-point you'll run into. If you want to get really classy, get a Browning Hi-Power. Old school style and holds its own against any modern 9mm as well.
