Where to get pallets from

I'm going "camping" (4x4 accessable only pretty much) this weekend for my brothers bachelor party and I was thinking about bringing as many pallets as possible to burn. Most places I believe recycle and get paid for pallets and I don't feel like stealing them. I don't mind telling a white lie to them about what I'm going to be doing with them, but I don't want to steal them...

I'll probably go out tonight and drive to grocery stores, etc that normally have 53' trailers drop stuff off constantly to see if they'd be willing to give them to me for free. Anybody else know what might be a successful place for me?

 

behind walmart....i've never been stopped and i pulled up with an 18 ft trailer one time.

 

IMO though they burn way to friggin fast. better off driving country roads and see if someone is selling firewood out by the road.

One of my friends works at WalMart and said that they recycle. I'll probably go there tonight and ask since they have a camera watching the area that has a cardboard and pallets for some reason haha.

And yeah, they do burn fast but they're good for starting up bigger stuff. We'll have a chainsaw there to cut wood down/ cut downed trees up, but it'd be nice to have kindling like pallets

 

and your left with a huge pile of nails after you burn them.

 

You got any factories near you?

I work in a factory (printing/binding) and we see pallets all day long. Out back, there's probably stacks and stacks of them.

Pick up the phone and call some local factories .... requesting 'junk' wooden pallets. You might get lucky and they'll let you haul them away.

 

Get a axe and cut some firewood, burns longer.

And there no nails to get in your feet when your drunk and naked

 

I figure stay away from the fire while im drunk and naked and I'll be ok.

If I try and walk thru the fire, I might have more problems than nails...

 

we used to have to send our pallets back to the main DC when i worked for Wallyworld.

maybe try some big box stores or any local distributors. we have "pallet pirates" that come to my work and gather them. they are a pain for us as we have limited yard space. it's similar to scrapping metal. i think in our area you can get about $2.50 - $3.00 ea for good condition pallets. i wish i had pictures of the pirates with the 12 ft stacks of them in the bed...i swear i don't know how they clear traffic lights lol

 

Whatever you do, do NOT take any pallets that say Chep or are colored blue. That is actually stealing because they are worth $5 per pallet. They are on an exchange program between the retailer and the supplier.

 

It's funny, near Pittsburgh (where I'm at in the summer with my parents and where my brother and finance live) there was an ad posted last night for like 30 free pallets. Too bad it'd be like a 2 hour drive there, plus another 3 or so hours to the place where the bachelors party is at.

I was just playing along with KRT to make him feel happy. I won't be showing my ass at all there unless I'm taking a shit in the woods.

Yeah, I think I'll just take Jansters advice and look up all kinds of warehouses here and call around tomorrow on my lunch break. There seem to be a lot of warehouses so I'd bet that I can get at least some so that the big logs will light.

Appreciate the offer Marc, but you're around 3 hours from me Being that I'm meeting my brother around 2PM at the place we're going, it'd be like a 6 hour total drive for me and I don't really feel like doing that haha.

 

have any construction around you? could probably find a bunch of wood in one of those big open dumpsters

 

Pallets burn fast and hot man. Try and find some hard woods in the country if you can. If not,,,Wal-mart, thats where we get ours

 

Ya, I figure they'd be great right once the little stuff burns up in order to get the fire real hot before the logs go on.

I put an ad up on craigslist earlier today and some guy has like 50 broken up or crap condition pallets behind his shop. I'll probably head out tomorrow for them.

 

Pool supply places, building supply places. Around here, they put them out by the street wanting people to take them.
