A/T's vs M/T's

What are your guys thoughts?

I've got my eye on a truck that's got a set of winter rims and tires with minimal wear on them and has the stock 17"s with 25,000-30,000 km's on the OEM tires, so i'm thinking if i do pull the trigger, i will get a set of tires to run when there's no snow right off the bat.

Considering i won't be using them to drive on snow, and the difference in cost is negligible ($50-$60 a tire), would you guys do an A/T or an M/T?

90% of my driving in this truck will be on road. The offroad aspect? i'd say 50% actual trails and 50% mixed of oilfield lease roads and fire roads for shuttling bikes, hiking, etc. The tires i'm considering are the Toyo Open Country A/T's or the Toyo Open Country M/T's. Talking to people who have them, both seem to wear well and are quiet and handle well on the road.

I'm just considering whether doing a full M/T is going to be a benefit or not for that 10% of the time i'm off roading.

Thoughts? Comments?

 

Get some A/T's......

M/T's can get squirrely in the rain up at highway speeds. With a light rear-end and a little water.....you get some major hydroplaning. M/T's just can't channel the water like A/T's can.....

Keep it safe - and go with A/T's.

 

A/Ts. I personally could not be any happier with my BFG A/Ts...

 

do the A/T. I got the toyo A/T and no complaints. almost about to push 10k on them and they still look brand new

 

A/T you cant go wrong with them.

 

I saw some toyo A/T's on a full size truck last night and they look good!

 

I just got these http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodye...odline=Wrangler DuraTrac&mrktarea=Light+Truck kinda like a cross between an AT and MT. They ride very smooth and quiet. I have no idea how they'll ware since they are so new to the market. The pics of them don't really do them justice they are nice and BEEFY.

 

You cant go wrong with a good set of All Terrains.

Like Janster said, M/Ts can be no good in wet weather. Not to mention they do not handle like a A/T will on road.

 

I'd go with A/T's. From what I've seen M/T's wear out a little faster because they are made out a slightly softer compound. Plus you get a little bit better gas mileage from the A/T's.

They got pretty caked up on the trail today so did the BFG Mud terrains that some of the other guys were running. I think the DuraTracs performed just as well as the mud terrains they cleared the gunk out fast towards the outsides of the tires the insides didn't clear it out as well. Overall these are awesome tires. I would highly reccomend them.

 

I can't tell you how they perform in the winter but for rain and mud, my hankooks dynapro MTs are awesome....and the road noise is comparable to an A/T...I lose grip in wet weather with anything really, but these provide enough grip under normal driving in wet weather. I definitely feel in control.

 

I picked up some general grabber ATs. They did great off road, good in the snow, minimal road noise, and good on the construction sites. MTs might look better, but they will perform poorly for the 90% of the time you are using them.

 

What are the tire sizes you are comparing?
265/70 R17 with 275/70 R17?

 

I have the A/Ts also, very solid tire.

 

x2 on the Duratracs. Nice beefy tire without the side effects of a M/T. Awesome traction in wet and snow while still being streetable.
