Thanks for your help. I do realize the issues with state lines etc.

So only the lower would have to be purchased from or shipped to a gun dealer with ffl. I have a customer that builds custom guns. I will touch base with him to see if I could do something like that through him. I considered going through him, but his markups are insane. I bought my Armalite for $900 through local law enforcement that has a gun shop. His "friend" price for me was $1400 for the same AR. I may just keep what I have and wait a couple years for the camper I'm looking for. NY sucks for getting into anything gun related.

Thanks, I plan on replacing the gas block with a quadrail but I can't afford to do it all at once. I will probably go with the riser.

UTG even makes a really cheap one if you're just going the econo route for now. Good reviews even.

Won't be the most elegant solution, but should do you just fine until you inevitably take out a mortgage to build an m4gery with all the trimmings.

Look at the Troy rails. They are pretty affordable compared to DD. I got 30% my rails on black Friday

    +1

    http://www.riflegear.com/c-24-free-float-forearms.aspx

I've got the Troy rails on my 14.5" and my AR22.
The 20" was going to get the long one, but I decided to go featureless with an A2 buttstock and MonsterMan fin grip. Since I can't have a VFG on a featureless, AND since I think the original triangular covers are hella sweet AND since a buddy on Calguns offered me a set of triangular covers for $20...

My 20" now sports a triangular cover :D

Where or how did you get that color scheme? Was thinking about getting a cheaper upper and experimenting with something like that.

    I winged it :D

AlumaHyde-II Coyote base coat (it looks kinda Olive in the picture but it's actually a dead-nuts match for Magpul FDE).
Let that cure for a week.
Fully assembled (minus selector) the upper to the lower, rail/tube, and (f)ACOG
Pulled fishnet stockings over it and misted on AlumaHyde-II Desert Tan for the lighter areas.
Let that cure for a week.
Used "sticks and leaves" masks that I cut out of paper plates, held them about 3" away from the work, and shot the dark brown and forest green using RustOleum Camo.
Let that cure for a week.
    Removed the fishnets.
Shot the whole mess with AlumaHyde-II matte clear.

Spent HOURS trying to sand/dig/ream that shit out of the selector hole and off of the takedown pins and selector to allow them to once again fit and move properly in the lower.
Mental note for the future... Mask off or plug EVERYTHING that you can't see once the gun is assembled.

Just bought a new Bushmaster Saturday. It's an XM15E2S

Guess I should have done some more homework, but I got a good deal. It only seems to have an 11-1/2" barrel with a flash suppressor extending it another 5-5/8" to make the 16" minimum. I'd like something more than that, like a 20" with a bull barrel.

We have a big gun show coming up in Denver in a couple weeks, hafta do some serious looking around.

It is a terrible idea. All the length of a 16" with all the reduced velocity of a 11.5". I don't know the history behind this configuration but I believe it has to do with making a commercial version of the original Colt Commando short barrel rifles that were popular in TV/movies during the '80s.

You can still buy new barrels in this configuration, though I don't know why you would.

Agreed, Being's it's never been fired I wonder if Bushmaster would give me credit on a longer bull-barrel one. I think they make them.

Below is a pic of a tape measure shoved into the suppressor until contacting the muzzle. It is recessed 4-5/8" (NOT the 5-5/8" I mentioned earlier...duh) indicating the 11-1/2" barrel.

I have the Colt. I like the smooth shape of the barrel shroud. It has a comfortable grip being kind of triangular - fits just right in my hand.

    Ditto.

If you want to go all mall ninja, just get a 16" and a thread-over fake can that makes it look like an 11.5.

At least then the only thing you're doing "bad" is adding non-functional weight.

    flash hider, not suppressor ;)

ditch that thing and go with a 16" barrel and mid length gas system

What kind of grouping are y'all getting at 50 yards?

I think I need to step it up to 64 gr ammo cuz I can't get better than 3-4" groups using a scope..

16" 1:7 chromed barrel heavy profile with a redfield 3-9x shooting BVAC 55gr psp
