High reving engine upon startup

I bought a 2011 Tacoma Prerunner DC with 4.0 engine and 25,000 miles on it in January of this year. It's the first Toyota I've had since a 1981 Corolla Coupe SR5. What a car. So far the Tacoma has been just as good. One question. Everytime I start the engine it revs up to about 1800 rpms and stays there for about 10 seconds when the engine is cold then drops down to about 1100 rpms. It stays at about 1800 rpms for about 5 seconds when started when the engine is warm then drops down to about 1100 rpms. Is this normal or should I have the dealer check it out?

Thanks, Super Black Tacoma. I just didn't know, and didn't want to ignore an engine problem until it got worse. Wish I'd gotten a Tacoma a long time ago. Didn't realize how much I missed having a Toyota.

No problem, these are great trucks you shouldn't have any major problems, as long as you do regular maintenance.

 

Ummm, normal, but not automatic choke. That's a carb thing. In the end it works the same though.

 

Newer vehicles rev like that to warm up the cats faster for better emissions.

 

most of the roar is caused by the fan anyway. no worrys
