bought my first toyota truck September 2011 and love it. silver, double cab TRD sport. when the 12's came out i was curious to see how much the same dealer would give me for my truck, now with about 8k miles on it, to upgrade to the same identical truck in a 2012 model.

so....i call and initiate the numbers game. i sent them three sources from which i based my logic on the value of my truck: KBB, NADA and even Black Book value. i paid $29,300 for my truck seven months ago. these guys told me they would give me $24,500 for the truck on trade for the same TRD sport in a 2012 model, so they wanted about $7,000 difference. i figure that to be around 20% depreciation on my truck, according to them. i told them thanks but no thanks and if i were serious about doing this, i would obviously sell the truck outright and go elsewhere to buy a new one. my salesman said he agreed, and tried to find flaw in each of the three valuations i found. i realize stealerships use black book, but he said they never give 'excellent' trade value for black book as that was close to retail. well the black book on my truck was something like $27,500 and they were still $3,000 off from that.

ridiculous! i understand they are in business to make money, but this is the third vehicle my family has bought from this dealership, all of which we received good deals on the initial vehicles purchased. i won't hesitate to call other dealers next time when i'm shopping. in the meantime, i love my truck and i'll just keep it!

Don't waste your time and money going from a 2011 to a 2012. wait for a complete redesign in a year or four. If the minor changes that the 2012 has tickles your fancy now I can only imagine what might happen when a new model is introduced.

i bought a 2012 after my 2001 got stolen, i was really holding out for the full redesign Tacoma to get a new one...but i didn't get that choice.

I know that in a year and half two years when the new ones come out, ill be able to get a very good price for my Tacoma by selling it privately.....and ill get the 2014 then. I might loose some money, but nothing compared to how much ill loose through a dealer swap.

Well, the OP could have bought a 2012, since he bought his '11 this past Sept.

I know hindsight's a great thing, but damn $7000 difference on trade.

yea i was just trying to basically see if the dealership was going to put its money where its mouth was, backing up the smoke they blew when i bought the truck about resale value and they want to sell me many vehicles. yea i guess they would, giving me nothing for my trades and stuffing their pockets. i have no intention of trading up for a 12, but would consider the 14's if that is when the new body style is introduced. i viewed this experience as a 'check and balance' for this dealership and this showed me, in the future, to buy straight out from them but do not trade with them. i'm sure many dealers are the same, but it was interested to see how much they were going to give me for trade on a 7 month old vehicle bought from their lot initially.

The dealership is not there to be your friend they are there to make a dollar and the only way they can do that is by having a profit margin. Take your truck in as trade at 24k and sell it for 27k. You can't expect them to sit there and come out even on something they can sell outright to someone 2 weeks later.

Sweet experiment dude. You have proven definitively that a new car loses significant value as soon as you drive it off the lot. Also unearthed by this investigation was the fact that car dealerships aim to make a profit and salesmen will say just about anything to make a sale.

    Mind=blown

So you have this dealership, and they give you great deals when you buy the truck. Then, you decide to sell it, and want RETAIL PRICING for them to buy it back, so you can go buy another truck at a discount?

Lets just use your numbers. You pay $29300 for it, and you now know they will turn around and resell it for ~$27500. So the vehicle lost about $2000 in 8 months, with you driving it every day.

Dealership is setting themselves up for a $3000 *gross* profit, less the cost of detailing it, having some team come out and wash the truck 3 times a week on the lot, advertising, paying their light, water, electricity, and providing a living for the people that work there(non sales commissions), and a commission for the sales guy that has to try to sell an 8 month old vehicle for $2k less than you can go buy a new, "redesigned" version of the truck for, while dealing with all the pricks offering $24k...

Yeah, sounds like they are really ripping you a new one on this deal... All the while, wasting time with you, who admits you have no plans on making the trade anyways.

If you want retail pricing on a sale, sell it yourself.

This guy makes an excellent point, as do others. These folks have a business to run, which costs money, and there's not a lot of volume these days to make up for poor margins. You have to be realistic with your expectations.

When you buy a new vehicle, you need to understand the tradeoff you are making. It will lose value as soon as you sign the papers. For me, it's the fact that I don't like other people touching my stuff. That is worth the initial depreciation to me, but I believe it pays off in the long run because most people are idiots.

There are several factors that go into what offer a dealership will take. At a basic level, they look at margins and volume and measure them monthly. If you go in later in the month and they have made good numbers that month, they are much more willing to deal. If you get ANY pushback at the end of a month, they haven't made their numbers and you might as well walk away then. Or you've found their toughest salesman, which is another good reason to walk away, because you will probably lose. Or, you just pay what they are asking because you have justified it based on your own personal values, which is why I don't like buying used vehicles (see above).

It helps if you understand the training that salespeople go through, as well as the basic mindset and personality of a salesperson. They basically want to win, and they are trained well and have good experience winning in a situation they are in every day. You have the money, but they have the car, and they know you want it. They will use that. You have to be willing to walk away, and I mean REALLY walk away, quickly, and gain that advantage position that they are trained to gain and hold.

You've got the bug and have become emotional about it, and they can sense that desire -- there is no other reason for you to be trying to work a deal in your situation.

You are not in a leverage position.
