Fuel Gauge Question

Is it my imagination, or does the fuel gauge move quicker between 3/4 and 1/4 tank. It just seems like I can sit on full or on a 1/4 tank longer than, let's say a 1/2 tank. Idk. I get 16-18 mpg, so not complaining. I was just wondering if anyone else notices.

 

No It totally does. it also stays above full for about 40 miles before it drops below the line.

 

I can get 100 miles out of my first quarter, then my gas mileage drops.

 

I was so excited the other day when I got in the truck and I had a full tank! I was like, wtf??? I had like half a tank earlier...Did i fill it up without realizing it...then I drove down the hill and drove on level ground :*(

 

How do you figure that ?

 

I've gotten 100 miles out of my first quarter tank if gas before. Then it goes down from there.

 

Thing is , where the quarter mark is on the gauge isn't actually 1/4 of the tank .

Similar to how you can drive for 30-40 miles below the E mark

Full Tank=21 gal.
3/4 Line= 16 gal.
1/2 Line= 12 gal.
1/4 line= 8 gal.
E Light = 4 gal.
E Line = 3 gal.

 

I sure hope that's spot on, because if i run it to the E line and suddenly my truck is on fumes, I'm gonna be pissed

 

Yes, this^^^^^^........ I can pull 145 miles at 3/4 mark regularly then only 210-240 at half tank then 300-330 at 1/4 mark & usually hittin 370-390 when the light comes on.

 

The tripometer states that I have driven 100 mile with the first quarter of the tank, but I only get 350ish over all. I don't get any worse gas the last 3/4, but the needle spends more time in the first quarter than the other three.

 

So glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this. I thought I was losing my mind.

 

I bet if you had a CAI that would throw those numbers off completely.

 

Why , does it recalibrate the fuel gauge or change the size of the gas tank ?

this is normal, on some boats, even modern boats it is direct, so you can literally be on E on a high wave and then 1/2 tank on normal chop, once you hit E on your Taco, you will have at least 30-40 miles, the F mark is really like 20 gallons, but if you really fill it up until the pump stops you are actually at 21.13 gallons

 

I can't say for sure on the Tacoma but on my Chevy Blazer this was due to the location of the fuel pump and associated hardware, annoying isn' t it.

 

IMO, the gauge is only in sync with how much gas is in the tank at 2 or maybe 3 points....completely full, completely empty & maybe half a tank. I'm sure that if I refill my tank when the gauge says 3/4 with 145 miles on trip that it will take 6 gallons or more to top off, not 5 gallons as the gauge reading would imply. My truck doesn't get 30 miles a gallon anywhere except in fantasyland. We do not have 25 gallon tanks so there isn't really 15 gallons left in the tank at 3/4 on the gauge as the tank capacity and math would imply so there is voodoo economics to a certain degree occurring here. Noted & adaptive compensation tactics implemented. Not much else to do about it.

 

The fuel level is better approximated with the ultragauge. Needle gauge isn't accurate at all.

11: 1/2
8: 1/4
4: light, 3.75 E
