neither...its all about the zero gen/pick-up's imo. double c-channel frame, a spindle thats stronger then a #2 pencil, doesnt have the weak coil buckets like the taco and a steering box instead of the problematic taco rack and pinion. oh did i mention the all mighty 22re and the fact that pick-ups are thousands cheaper giving you more money to spend on parts

I wouldn't mind a pickup, my only concern with them was power in sand and such. Do they have enough power in your opinion?

BTW your runner is all sorts of badass.

EDIT: I can weld so boxing a frame would suck, but I could do it.

Anyone do this with a 2nd gen yet?:
    http://tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13782

my core support is failing on me and it gets worse after every trip.

my coil buckets are also starting to...actually, they are bent to shit.

Im thinking of getting a basic engine cage that has core support and ties in my coil buckets together, maybe even cutting through the coil bucket and getting new upper shock mounts.

I am pretty comfortable with my 8" set up, and I cant really get that much more droop due to my 4x4 limitations. Only gain of going 10" or 12" for me is to have dual rates. Should I:
    a) design the engine cage to retain my 8" shocks
    b) trade my 8" for 12" and build the cage around those

I just want to make sure Im considering all factors before I plan this out.

There's fixes for all three of those. :D

    ^THIS. Fuck coil buckets.
If you're looking for something to beat on you can't go wrong with this methodology. And if you go 4x4, manual hubs are standard.

If you're spending the money, I would trade up and take advantage of the dual rate. There's two things regret not doing on my front to start with.

    1) Heimed uppers
    2) Engine cage and 10" w/dual rate.

I dont think it will cost much $$$ at all to trade my 8"s up for 12"s, from what I hear, 8"s are really in demand. I'll throw up a trade thread in DR.

Yep. Exaclty my point. Shouldn't be too hard to get rid of 8's and pick up 10's/12's.
Glad you started with Heims. I blame Matt (Nelson) for not suggesting to me to start with heimed uppers.

my 22re is bone ass stock and i did fine in pismo. best part about the 22 motors is they can take a beating like no other can. ya as jason flew by me with the 3.4 supercharged i was pretty jealous. but if we both blew our motors at the same time i could find a fully rebuilt for around 1000$ while jason is gonna be thousands over that. food for thought i guess.

i would do the 12's for sure. getting rid of the stock bucket is priceless and well worth whatever you spend doing it. and running a dual rate will be soo much nicer in the small choppy stuff

I had my 8s up for trade for 10s and did not get much interest. Actually worked out better just selling them and picking up 10s seperately. I'm sure yours are in much better condition than mine were so u may have better luck but either way works. Also why do u want 12s? I'm sure 10s will cycle the full travel of your kit probably with an extra inch to spare.

I like the thinking, but might be too big and heavy for what I am thinking, thanks for the response!

hmm... Good idea, didn't even think about a pickup for LT before this...

Thanks! And I love your truck! read your build thread a couple times :D

Good thinking! Thanks for helping me out!

 Looks like enough power! ;)

Well I think that might be what I go with then, thanks guys!

An engine cage is probably the best way win 12s. If you just do an engine cage to the buckets you will first news to have your coil buckets straightened like Paul aka Straycat had to do before his engine cage.

My 05 4x4 Tundra was my favorite truck i have ever owned, i liked it better than my build second gen Tundra. I took that 05 all the way from the canal to china wall through the dunes no problem with just coilovers and 33's! May she rest in peace :(

the work involved in getting coil buckets straightened will be just as much if not more than build new mounts and a cage.

My main reason for a cage isnt to run 12s - it's because my engine compartment is slowly falling apart.

If I can have everything mounted to a cage in the engine and not sheet metal, i'll be a happy camper.

12s will just be icing on the cake.
