Very nice project Mark. I like the design and the stone work.

The Big Brown Truck arrived today and dropped this off. It's a WWII Sniper rifle - actually a repro built using a 1937 Soviet Mosin-Nagant M91/30. The scopes are produced in the same factory that made the originals during the war and to the same specifications. The stock is a pre-war version; probably original.

The turned down bolt and scope are added and numbered to the receiver. The butt and floor plates also match - they are original to the rifle.

Can't wait to sight it in!

This is probably a dumb question, but what caliber does it shoot?

It shoots 7.62X54R - very common and inexpensive. I bought 800 rounds a few months ago for under $100. The only downside is that it is corrossive so you have to clean after firing - actually you can pour hot waterdown the barrel and then follow up with cleaning for two days.

That's the NATO round, isn't it? When I bought my Ruger .380 a couple of years ago, that caliber was in short supply, except for Russian made. But it was pretty smoky and dirty powder.

No, the NATO round was 7.62X51mm. The Soviets went with the slightly larger round so they could use our ammo but we could not use theirs.

The downside of the Soviet bloc ammo is that it is all corrosive so you have to properly clean the rifle after firing.

... ^^^ ... The M-14 was my training rifle and my favorite of all the long guns in RVN.

About a year ago, I was holding a M-14 in a gun store and forgot how big and heavy they really were.

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
Evening everybody. I finally got the Firestone bags installed in between work and all the other stuff that always comes up when you're doing a project.

And, for what it's worth, the guys that claim they can do both sides in three hours are obviously better mechanics than I am. :D It took me most of a day but having fingers with the size and dexterity of bananas I wasn't surprised.

One thing I would pass along. The air fittings come with a coating of red stuff in the threads. It isn't consistent and there were gaps in it. I put a layer of teflon tape on and so far there are no leaks. If you get everything installed and one of the screw-in air fittings is leaking around the threads you'll have to darn near disassemble the whole thing to get it out. Ask me how I know. ;)

The ride and load carrying capacity are greatly improved. I brought a load of firewood home from work today and, with all my work junk that I carry every day, I'm sure I was over the allowable weight. Forty pounds of air in the bags leveled everything nicely. With just the canopy and the usual load of work stuff fifteen pounds seems to do the trick.

Thanks to everybody for all the advice.

7.62X51mm M14 & M60 in RVN.. Took my M16 ( POS) after about 1 mo. and traded it in on a M14. Never looked back but did not have to pack the thing only carry it down to the boat. The 14 would do a head shoot at 500 yards and a body shot at 800 yards  all day long. Non stop on taking the USMC boy's $ in a bet on the shot, shoot out :) Jim

evening all: all I need is that scope that you had.
carried this around in maine one yr., could only have a 5 round clip to be legal.
all I know is that the darn thing is heavy. wish I could have at least shot one deer with it.
it's not a NM, but I had it gone over by a guy that shot camp perry. it's pretty accurate.
