There are multiple topics on this in this forum(search feature FTW!) But both reg and syn are both good..it depends on how you treat your truck..if you thrash it around and such..use syn..if you just grandma drive it...reg is fine..both can be fine..some say the engine runs better on syn..but regular isn't bad for the engine.

What type of oil is your dealer using?

Ask your dealer if they have Mobile 1 available. If they do, ask them if you can upgrade to Mobile 1 on your oil changes and 'how much will it cost' to make the upgrade?

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my high performance flat tappet engine because it has 0.13% Zn. Zn was reduced in conventional oils for environmental concerns. Zn is excellent in higher friction applications.

I use conventional oil in my other engines.

The old flat tappet engines typically ran over 100K miles with conventional oil; some designs well past 200K.

Modern engines w/ conventional oil frequently achieve over 300K miles before overhaul is required; even domestic engines.

One synthetic oil down side is cost which can offset any mileage gains.

Engines still wear out even if synthetic is used; it is unclear if engine life is extended. I'd much prefer clean conventional oil than dirty synthetic oil. Piston blowby causes oil to get dirty.

Leaks usually occur when you switch to synthetic after many years and a shitload lot of miles.

Switching now is good!! I switched to mobile 1 at about 2500miles and have been using it ever since.

I have put fully synthetic in every thing I've owned at my first oil change and only once had an issue (leaky trans)! That issue was there before the synthetic oil it just a little worst, after fix no problem! :D

I've heard different stories where they say not to switch to synthetic until 30K when your engine is broken in but I dont believe that fact. I switched over to full synthetic at around 2K and havent had any issues since!

    Synthetic Motor Oils

How Mobil 1 keeps your engine running like new

Synthetic motor oils – such as Mobil 1 – contain more highly refined base oils than those used in conventional mineral oils, which can offer you better protection and performance. Synthetic oils provide a variety of benefits, such as excellent high- and low-temperature performance, that can provide excellent engine protection.

    Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oils

There are two basic types of engine oil available:

Conventional mineral oil, the traditional engine oil and most widely used

Synthetic motor oil , which is steadily gaining popularity among auto manufacturers and consumers

(There are also synthetic blend motor oils, which are a blend of synthetic oils and conventional mineral oils. Synthetic blend motor oils are also sometimes called “semi-synthetics”.)

Both types of engine oil are made from crude oil that comes from the ground. The difference is that synthetic oils undergo numerous additional highly-advanced distilling, refining, and purification processes — and therefore are of a higher purity and quality than conventional mineral oils. This not only removes more impurities from the original crude, it also enables the engineering of the lubricant’s individual molecules to be uniform and consistent, tailored to meet the specific high-performance demands of modern engines. These customized molecules provide higher levels of protection and performance, even in extreme conditions.

The performance of synthetic motor oil is more robust, especially in terms of low-temperature pumpability, high-temperature stability, and protection against deposits. These attributes translate directly into less engine wear and longer engine life.

An advanced full synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 outperforms our conventional oils and can deliver a quantum leap in performance just by changing the oil in almost any engine.

Mobil 1 keeps your engine running like new with:

    advanced wear protection
sludge combating formula to keep engines clean
    high-temperature protection
    low-temperature start-up protection
See the tests that prove these four benefits of Mobil 1.

Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil outperforms our conventional oils and synthetic blends — and meets or exceeds the latest industry standards — helping to extend engine life.

Reformulated for the Latest Industry Standards

As technology advances, automobile manufacturing, government, and industry standards advance as well. For example, the latest performance certification for motor oils, International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-5, has been designed to improve fuel economy, boost engine oil robustness, and protect emission control systems.

Mobil 1 motor oil has been upgraded to meet and/or exceed the latest ILSAC GF-5 industry standard.

I switched to Mobil 1 in one car several years back.
I could not detect any mileage or performance gains; perhaps a dyno could.
Mobil 1 cost went so high I could not justify the expense so I switched back to conventional in that car.

I prefer spending that extra money fighting frame rust since I know engines can exceed 300K on conventional oil. Frame failure is far more expensive than engine failure.
