I saw the new geologists! Welcome, welcome.

Flint and chert are pretty much the same thing, chemically. Both are crypto- to microcrystalline quartz. Flint I guess is a black form of chert and has a very waxy luster, whereas chert can be any color and may have a slightly waxy luster or no luster at all. Or you might just say flint is a local name for chert.

It's been a confusing week at work, my boss has changed what I'm doing and where I'm going and when it'll happen about 4 times. But looks like he finally settled on something- hooray! The only thing that really drives me crazy about my job is the constant changes of plans.

My geology profs in college warned me that I would eventually be unable to sleep late if I worked in the o&g industry. Not that my job would necessarily require it, but I'd have one that would force me to keep strange hours and eventually I'd just be converted to form. Well, here I am, awake at 4:00 am. Shift starts at 6:00. Coffee, please!

Skids on location. There aren't enough motels to reliably find a room, and they're all 40 or 50 miles away.

Usually surface casing to release. For most of our rigs that means about 3-4 weeks on, 2 weeks off. But then there are those weird rigs. The last rig I was on took 5-6 weeks to drill a well and that operator wanted us there at spud, so we couldn't count on more than 10 days off and sometimes as little as 4. Nice paychecks but I'd rather have a little more time off.

The worst I've had to do was a well that went 85 days surface casing to release. And bloody everything went wrong! 3 fishing trips totaling 18 days and 2 of them were unsuccessful, damaged the derrick when the driller crowned out the kelly, lost circulation for 4 days, the wellbore caved in every time we tripped, and couldn't get a bit to last more than 30 hours so we were tripping every 2-3 days, just one problem after another. And at the time I worked for the cheapest mudlogging company you've ever seen. They had 30' FEMA trailers that we both lived and worked in, 2 people per well, and they wouldn't fix the heat and air conditioning, the hot water didn't work... that was my last well working for them, I got tired of it and started calling around.

So.. after living in a 30' FEMA trailer sitting next to a diesel-powered generator for 3 months, I have no problem whatsoever with a skid. It's quiet, heat, air conditioning and all the appliances work, and our skid is separate from our work area so it's really not too bad. Hotel rooms are actually kind of a hassle, you spend a lot of money eating in restaurants (or worse you get stuck in a town where the only "restaurant" is a Subway that's in a gas station) and logging companies never pay mileage motel to well so if you get one of those wells 60 or 70 miles from the nearest available motel room you spend your entire paycheck getting to work. Right now, in the realm of on-site geology, this is the best situation I've been in. :)

LOL that miserable well, our first fishing trip lasted 10 days. The company man finally told me if I wanted to go home that was fine and he'd call when they needed me to come back. At the time I didn't have a "home," we had a company bunk house where I stayed. But a friend was on a well right by a lake, and he was on a 1-man well so he could leave. So I took my laptop and an air card so I could send my reports and we spent a week at the lake camping, fishing, and drinking beer. I'd call the company man to get an update for my report. I asked him, "Did you catch your fish?... That's too bad, I caught 2 catfish and a walleye."

    "Shut up, mudlogger." *Click*

Fishing on a drilling rig means something has fallen down the well that doesn't belong there- a wrench perhaps, or the drill pipe has broken off. So they have to use special tools- some are hooks or grapples, some are just magnetic- to get it out of the well before they can continue drilling.
