And I know for a fact it isn't my shooting. The only other rifle ive shot a bunch is my pellet gun. I can shoot quarter size grouping with it at 30yrds all day long..

I'm assuming here you're shooting unsupported? If you're benched & supported, at 50yds your 3-9x is a freaking telescope and you should have no problem tack driving. It's one of 3 things - you're shooting in a hurricane, barrel defect or weapon defect, or it's you. Obviously there's much more of a flinch factor on your AR when compared to a pellet gun...just sayin. Odds are much higher in one of those options than the other two.

I sighted my 16" govt middy at 25yd with flip ups, and off of a bench I was getting penny size 3 shot groups. I shot a eight round string the size of little bigger than a quarter. At 75 yds, I shot 2" groups seated, no bags.

Ya I know there is a flinch factor but I honestly think I'm flinching with this gun. And yes at 50 yards benched, bi pod and a sand bag under the magazine. 3" just seems so unacceptable at 50yards..

I think that 1:7 twist is over stabilizing those small 55grs

Same ammo I'm shooting and same twist rate with the same issue: http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1867707

    Higher grains yielded better accuracy.

twist rate is not a factor here. I shoot 55gr all day long at 50yards and can get 1"-2" groups with a red dot with a 1:7 twist.

I say let someone else shoot your gun and see if they have the same problem. odds are they wont.

also you might want to get lower scope rings as well. It has to be impossible to get any kind of cheek weld with those skyscraper rings!

I load 55 gr FMJ or HP over TAC to around 2800 fps and get HONEST 1.5" groups at 50 yds with irons out of my 1:7" AR and I have terrible astigmatism. My guess would be something is loose. Check all your scope ring screws by trying to tighten them. Then check your rings at the base, and make sure those bolts are tight. If everything is tight I'd pull the handguard and check your barrel nut with a barrel wrench.

That's assuming you're not using a crap scope. If it's a $50 wal-mart special, that would be where I would start.

You're quite right. I know it's not a suppressor as in silencer. I've seen some call them flash suppressors but they probably know less about them than I do. ;->

Palmetto sure has a good selection, thanks. The threaded muzzles are...'interesting'. ;-> Dunno if I'm up to swapping barrels and dealing with the gas/port/sight plumbing issues this soon.

I'm quite comfortable with the 1911 pistols and done some pretty good kitchen table gun smithing with them. Have a lathe and used to shoot IPSC for a few years until they went to an 'arms race' with all the optical sights and no longer a 'Practical' shooting pursuit. Besides trashing a leg with a couple motorcycle getoffs and getting old didn't help.

Looks like Bush does market some target models. Found out they don't want to deal with an upper exchange + $$ . They said I could 'purchase' what I wanted. Jeeze what a concept! Can't blame them for not wanting the 11.5" barrels back. Who, besides me, would be dumb enough to buy one?

Might just go back to considering the Colt MT6601 or something as yet undiscovered.

    Thanks,

    Whit

I was looking through my gallery and came across this pic. this is @50 yards with a unmagnified red dot using a 1:7 twist BCM rifle with 55gr XM193. 10 shot group off the bench without rests, just supporting the rifle by leaning on the bench with my arms

I'm gonna switch ammo and see what happens. I was looking at the PMC xtac 62gr.

I might buy a box of hornady match ammo to see how that does too

    Careful with the 62gr.
PMC and most others are steel core and many ranges don't allow it during fire season. Likewise, not smart to shoot out on BLM land when it's dry and fire risk is up.

Stick a magnet to the tip and if it stays, switch to a non-magnetic (like XM193 55gr)

Because 55 trainers stabilize in 1:7 twist barrels for everyone else, and it makes no sense to blame the ammo. You should be getting better groups with cheap Russian crap ammo, and you're usin better ammo than that.

Ohhh - dude. OK, new theory. You mentioned a photo, so I went back and looked. Your scope is really high. I know it probably seems OK when you're shooting standing up, because you don't have to crane your neck down. Here's the deal; you have two possibly compounding issues. First, there's no way you're getting a cheek weld. That makes you shakey and keeps you from having great groups. Second, there is an issue called parallax. This is when you can move your head around while looking through the scope and you can see the crosshairs move on the target. That cheap scope (no offense) isn't going to have a parallax adjustment, so you might be dealing with that. The problem is, you might not even know it, because you could be putting the crosshairs right on the target and still not be getting great groups. You need that firm cheekweld to minimize the effect of parallax by putting your face in the same spot every time.

I'd recommend duct taping a folded hand towel over your stock to raise your cheekrest until you have a good sight picture, and see if that helps. If it does, you might consider buying lower rings and cutting or replacing that gas block sight. You'll have to figure out how to do all this and still be able to cycle your charging handle, but I think it'll be worth it for you.

Perfect explanation. Here's a visual...because of the nature of how light travels through glass - no different than looking at fish in water - it appears to curve if you're not looking straight through. Without having your cheek rested and your eye at a consistent level, you're gonna be looking at a different crosshair location every time.

A properly welded cheek would get you the solid line...unproperly welded gets you the dotted. Farther out you go, the bigger the distortion becomes.
