I have an escort and the only time it helps is on long stretches of highway. In town it doesn't really help. And just because I have it doesn't mean I speed all the time. It actually made me realize that 90% of the time cops aren't radar-ing. I still laugh when a cop goes by and all the cars slam on their brakes when he isn't even looking for speeders.

 

Not when you buy a decent detector. I spent 225 on mine and it has paid for itself 10x over again. Cops in Utah/Vegas have their detectors on ALL THE TIME. My detector starts going off like .5-1 mile in advance. I dont speed all the time but when it goes off, it just reminds you to check your speed and make sure your not speeding. Def worth the investment IMO. Just dont buy a cheap one cuz they wont do you any good

 

I like the remote mounted ones the best, very small display mounted anywhere in the cab that suits you (and out of sight from thieves) and the antenna mounted behind the grill. You have to use your head a little, just keep some one in front by a moderate distance. If the officer is really playing, and your alone and speeding, you bought yourself a ticket. Here's what I use, it's a good unit, the Valentines and Escorts are considered the best, but are pretty costly.

Radar detectors should be mounted as high as possible to get the best viewing position on the road.

Mounted high in the windshield is where they are designed to go for a reason. Behind a grille will just add interference and reduce your detection distance significantly.

Also, what happens when a cop sneaks up from behind? Then you have an entire car blocking your antenna from the radar.

Really, remote displays are designed to get the display in a safe comfortable position - not to relocate the detector to a hidden, less useful location (unless you have multiple sensors and all that - which is way more than a $250 detector)

 

I have an Escort 9500i. Id stick with Escort or Valentine. Good tool if you use it with common sense. If you have it to blatantly speed then you'll get nailed eventually. To just say dont speed is also dumb just as a blanket statement. What does one consider speeding? Anything over the speed limit or over enough to get pulled over? You could be doing 60 in a 55. Technically thats over but youre likely not getting pulled over nor are you endangering anyone. Hell the one highway here the troopers dont generally bother you unless youre 15 or more over. And im usually only 10 over. Sure if youre going 95 all the time you could make the argument to just slow down.

 

Depends on what you read. Some say it's a better picture of the road because its the leading part of the vechicle and because of reflected waves of the hood, (if mounted higher) and plastic (grill) doesn't restrict as well. I've read both sides of the argument.

 

A plastic grill would definitely do less damage than metallic, so for those that aren't Satoshi or similar should be all good

I never heard about the hood helping radar before, but I have read that white hoods especially are terrible when you have windshield mounted detectors - all kinds of bad reflections I guess
EDIT: just noticed you have a white Taco - ^^that wasn't a direct hit. I used to run radar in my white Ford Escort

 

I was talking about the hood "bouncing" signals up and away from windshield mounted units, hurting reception. Here is a little light reading, read the fourth paragraph closely.

My vote is for the Escort. I have the passport X50 and I've been very impressed with the performance. Only other one I would consider is the V1.

 

Long road trips? Just doing 10 over, which isn't even dangerous (in fact, some places that's slower than traffic is moving) over a ten hour drive will get you 100 miles further down the road. 15 Over will get you 150 miles further along. That's pretty significant when you're travelling 1,000 miles or so.

reading this and seeing lots of haters and lots of praisers. I have an escort 8500, had it for years, and highly recommend it as well as 9500 and the V1. Valentine is best by far, speaking from experience in selling these as well as comparing one I borrowed from a friend to my 8500. $300 is about average for these if you buy them used. One thing, if you buy them used, call the manufactuer and see if you can have it updated.
