I'm in the truck market and am looking at Taco and Silverado. I'm very familiar with Chevy. In my head the pros and cons of Taco are:

Taco Pros: Slightly better fuel economy. Lower cost. More reliable electronics. More nimble on street and trail.

Taco Cons: Very scary frame rust issue (I'm extremely confident in Chevy frame and body). Composite bed strength and unproven durability. Lower payload and towing capacity. Less comfortable on long trip. Not Hilux.

Draw: Drive train durability and reliability. After market parts availability.

Unknown: Which has most durable dash and interior?

Does anyone think I'm near the target?

Our frames are made by the same company that makes Chevy frames.

Bed strength is awesome. It's durability is proven. Dash and interior? I dunno...flip a coin to be honest. After being in new E-2500 I prefer my dash in the Taco.

I have no problem driving hours and hours in my truck. Honestly I find the chevy seats to hurt my ass more, but body types vary. I'm a sinewy tall lanky bastard so the TRD seats are tops IMO.

He's saying the Tacoma's have good drive train and aftermarket availability.

No, he's saying Tacomas and Silverados have about the same drivetrain reliability, which most here would object to.

Yeah seriously. I have an 05 regular cab z71 just broke 200k no problems at all except my transfer case actuator crapped out one time and one tranny rebuild. No rattles either and I spend quite a bit off time off road. My stock g80 still locks up smooth every time. Only draw back is the shitty torsion bar ifs but Chevy fixed that on the new trucks.

hi. my brother has a ’09 i have ’07 dcsb with trd off road. both 4wd.

    1. Composite bed strength is very strong i have not read any think about even one failing or braking. it will never rust. they are even making bridges out of composite now.

    2. the V6 with towing package can tow 6500 lbs

i think my taco has a much better dash and all around interior. brothers door panel is loose on like 2 doors. i think my seats are allot more comfortable than his front and back seats. in august i drove 6h (half way) to NY and was very comfortable driving for 6 straight hours!! other 6 dad drove.

    i get around 18 to 20MPG.

also fram rust was really in the north and to 1st gen. not as much with 2nd gen. tn you will not really have allot of problems since we don’t use that much salt.

also me and my brother went to charleston SC in feb on way back his fuel gauge just stopped working and went to E was at over half tank.

I just would not be caught dead, handing a GM dealer cash. Fuck them, they are part of the reason I owed the Feds $$ this year

Rust issue was long since solved, and was a supplier issue, not a knock against Toyota.

The composite bed is fine and won't break unless you're trying to break it. They've been around for 7 years so I wouldn't say it's unproven. At least it saves you from immediately running out and getting it sprayed with Line-x like I would if I had a metal bed.

Apples and oranges comparison, really. Question shouldn't be based on specific merits of each truck rather on whether or not you need a full size or not. Then go from there. I don't have a problem with the Silverado and Sierra I've always liked them, but at this point I wouldn't buy one since a new one will be around the corner soon. Then again I guess the same could be said for the Taco in a couple years.

Ok the taco trans is better, never even heard of someone rebuilding a tacoma trans and there are quite a few 200k+ mile second gens on here.

I traded off my 2003 Silvo Z71 for my 2007 Taco Doublecab TRD Sport. I like this Taco waaaaaay more than I ever liked the Silverado. The Tacoma is MUCH more capable off road and in the snow. Also it has a much more sporty feel in general and is easy to fly around town in and parking is easier. Overall if your not towing huge loads I vote for the Tacoma. (But install Add a Leafs too)

You're saying he should compare the Tacoma with the Canyon?

those 100k trans rebuilds offset the fuel savings quite a bit.

Well if you consider a tranny rebuild to be no problem then I guess they do have about the same reliability.

I traded an 01 4 Runner in on an 04 Silverado Z71 extended cab last year. 4 months later I traded the Chevy in on an 06 Tacoma TRD dcsb. After owning 3 4 Runners in the last 10 years, I wanted a pickup & wanted a full size. I couldn't afford a used Tundra, so I bought the Chevy. After driving it for 4 months, I decided it was too big & the steering & brakes felt sloppy compared to what I was used to. The interior in the Chevy was very plush & roomy. The truck was great out on the highway, but it sucked driving it around town & I really didn't need a 6-1/2 foot bed. The Tacoma fit the bill perfectly.
