Mobil 1 75w-90 LS

I just realized I picked up the "LS" version Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil. Is this okay to run through my diffs? Rear diff has a locker but not LSD.

Sorry you cought some feeling but to answer you question yes your fine. The LS on the Moble 1 is more of a marketing strategy. It just means it safe on a rears with limited slip. I would send you to the link to the tread but I haven't figure out how to do that from my phone. It's in the How to change you diff fluid step by step. It has 45 pages of some great information. I hope this helps you out this time.

The oil you have is fine.

 

It is what I put in my locking diff. yesterday... but stepped up to the 75-140 Mobil 1 for the rear and the regular 75-90 Mobil 1 for the front and transfer case. I had 39,000 miles on my truck. The rear diff oil was changed when the truck was 7 months old after a muddy water crossing contaminated the rear diff. oil (I did the rear breather mod after that, see link below).

There is only one Mobil 1 and it has LS on the bottle, as far as I can see...

The only harm is to those with an '05-'08 Sport with the mechanical limited slip, if they don't use a LS additive.

 

It's fine for all diffs. If you're actually going to USE your diffs (wheeling especially), step up to 85-140, at least in the rear. Towing as well.

These e-locker diffs are on the weaker side for the weight and power of the truck.

 

why going to 145 when specs say 90?

 

Investigate the effects of hard use of differential gears, the effects of high heat and forces on gear lubricants, the characteristic of viscosity, and make a wild guess about it.

Modern engines are designed with technology that is relatively sensitive to oil weight. Using the correct/incorrect-spec oil can have noticeable effects. Modern differentials are the same fucking things they were 40 years ago, give or take a little machining precision. Managing their lubrication is mainly about managing oil weight vs. physical factors involved in use.

ill make a wild guess that you're pretty smart aint ya.

i mean the specs say 90 and now oil is made different than forty years ago. there are more modern additives that can handle the heat, loads , etc.
for instance mobile one makes the 90 in HD commercial grade version.

i was really looking for a helpful response to my question about a couple of responses to the op question. thought that was what this forum was about. so thanks for not answering my question. you maybe should learn a little tact to add to all that smartassness in your head.

 

Individual formulations are proprietary, yes, but it's all essentially about API GL grades and ILSAC grades. These are the governing bodies that standardize lubrication characteristics.

Mobil 1's "HD" grade 90w is pretty much marketing, just like their claim that their motor oil is "full synthetic" when in fact it's made from grade III hydrocracked dino-oil base stocks. Does it matter? I would argue in application it doesn't.

Now, one company's oil formula may deal with lazy maintenance better, but in terms of in-vehicle performance, they're all pretty similar, especially gear lubes.

Some of us get tired of answering the same questions 12 times per week and recommend instead that people learn to do research for themselves. Where do you think people with good answers got their good answers from?

 

On daily driven truck probably no point goign to 140 unless somebody likes burning more fuel.

However, 140 is for towing heavy use especially with mechanical Limited slipp in the rear. Simply 140 can take more heat and pressure but its not recommended if you constantly driving with higher speeds.
