Factory Tweeters?

I just upgraded my head unit and front speakers. I have a 2008 double cab with non JBL. I left the factory tweeters in place even though the new speakers have built in tweeters. Should I go back in and remove the factory tweeters or not? Next come the rear door speakers...

 

um, you might want to remove those factory tweeters. because, if you already have coaxial speakers, it might distort the sound quality to just leave the old factory tweeters in place.

You have to take off the door panel in order to get into the door where the tweeters are. Like beastlytaco said just unplug them and let them stay there.

 

but they are wired in series with the woofers so you unplug them the whole thing loses signal

 

Do a direct connect with the woofers

 

I left my tweeters in after I installed everything, figuring that I'm going to take them out once they I blow them. My aftermarket speakers have the tweeters on them as well. So far, a year and change later and they still haven't blown. So, you can leave them alone if you want. But thats my IMHO.

mine are still hooked up until i replace my after market speakers with components. No issues with sound what so ever

 

It sounds great considering I havent updated the rear speaker yet, I apreciate the comments and I glad I waited because I was going to snip the tweeter wires and that would have caused quite the headache if they affect the speakers...

 

Or, you can do what I did - just bypass all the factory wiring, run new speaker wire and hook up amps to your new headunit...

 

Or you could just disconnect it and be like "I have 4 tweeters...but only 2 work."

 

Okay so I am going to stick with the factory tweeters for now. I just got a set of Blaupunkt "system" speakers for free. They have the sperate tweeters, Can I install these in the rear without tweeters? Or should I swap the front speakers to the rear and intall the Blaupunkts in the front with the factory tweeters???

 

I snipped mine. I cut the wires at the white tweeter connectors. There are four wires. Splice like colors together (e.g. blue to blue, green to green).

 

They're not series. There are four wires at the connector but only two at the tweeter. There's a tap inside the harness. It goes away because the splice to the tweeters is between the tweeter and the white connector. When you disconnect the white connector, you're cutting the wire source to the woofer as well as the tweeter. I tried splicing the two connectors at the tweeter and the sound in the woofer went away. Since they were in parallel with the woofer, it created a short around the woofer. If they were series, splicing them at the tweeter would have been like a straight wire to the woofer.


If you splice the like-colored wires at the connector (blue to blue, green to green), it'll work. I think you can also just cut the one of the two wires at the tweeter. I spliced because I didn't want a free wire hanging in there.

 

Here's my highly technical drawing . The arrow is pointing at the connector you disconnected. You can see why it would lose signal even though they're parallel.

 

After breaking in the speakers I noticed its a little tinny with the factroty tweeters running. I am not %100 sure on your explanation evil monkey can you clarify please?

 

My explanation pertains to the white connector that runs to the tweeter (should be high on the door near the tweeter). There are four wires running through that connector, two pairs of the same color. Wires then go through a black plastic conduit with only two wires coming out the other side, which connect to the tweeter. I don't remember the colors on the left side (I think it was red/black). On the right side of my truck, those pairs are green & blue (two green wires & two blue wires). I clipped the connector out (either side of the plug, it doesn't matter) and spliced together the like-colored wires: splice blue to blue and splice green to green.

Alternately, you can just cut one of the two wires at the tweeter itself. Either one. It doesn't matter.
