Advice on attaching box to bed

I have a 09 Access Cab. I am trying to figure out how to install a Pro Tuff Bin in the bed. I want it against the cab. Right now I have a bolt that goes through the box and bed and then I use 2 toilet anchors to attach it to the bed rail.

This install is ok, but it is a pain to get under the truck to but the bolt in. Does anyone have an suggestions on how else to attach it? I want to be able to put it in and take it out easily.

Just tie it down on the sides with straps or turnbuckles.

or use the cargo cross bars or a cargo divider and pin it in.

 

I am wanting something that is somewhat secure with all of the attachment being hard to get to without getting into the box. My ideal way would be something that attaches to the bed rail (the toilet bolts do not work too well) and a threaded place in the bed to run one or two bolts through. When I remove the box, I want there to be nothing left in the bed (except a hole) if at all possible.

 

I think you are going to be doing a custom fab job then. I can give you some other ideas. But if you are set on THAT box and not having anything left in the bed when you remove it- You gotta hit up a hardware store and/or a auto parts store.

Find a nut set in a rubber grommet (they make them for motorcycle windscreens) and a bolt with a head large enuf to sit in the bed rail the way you want them too.
Not much help-I know...but it's going to be a toughy to get help over the internet.

Toyota sells a tool box for our trucks.....a bit pricey tho....

 

Just picked a similar model up from Wally world weeks ago. Small hole through the composite bed, done. Well I also have a thick bed matt so that'll hide the hole when not bolted down.
Then took a piece if 1/4" plywood about a foot long by 10" wide and place inside bottom of box, insert bolt through wood (box doesn't move as much) add a few washers and a nylon nut - viola - mission complete. Can remove / install in less than 5 minutes.

 

The way I have it installed now is 1 bolt that comes up from the bed, washer & nut, into the box with a washer and nut. I also have 2 toilet bolts that are in the bed rail (they only catch on the top). Yes the box is slightly higher than the bed.


The problem with this setup is that I have a bolt sticking up 2 inches off the bed unless I take the nut off, then I have to get back under the truck to put it back in. The toilet bolts will come loose just by bumping the box without the bolt in the bed.

The only other though that I had (i really don't want to do it) was to make a steel plate with a nut welded to it then put this under the bed and screw it in with flush screws. Then I could take a bolt from inside the box and screw it directly in. (Hard to explain)

I am a big boy and it is hard to get under the truck especially since mine is a 2 WD.

 

my plan (doing a similar thing) is to attach some cheap d-rings to the box (well supported) and use a cable lock to lock it to my d-rings in the bed.

might look a little crappy, but it'll work.

Another option might be to attach a bolt sticking out from the side rails. Then put a hole in your rubbermaid thingy and slide the box into position over the bolt. Then slip a nut onto it. Or have a hole in the bolt and put a pad-lock through the hole (this is all on the inside of the rubbermaid)

 

Pricey the Toyota box is but I love mine!!

 

I like to Toyota one but 1. I didn't want to spend that much money 2. I only use it every couple of weeks 3. I drive close to 100 miles a day to less weight is better.

 

You can mount your box this way. Remove the wing-nut, remove your toolbox and the mounting bolt stays put in the bed. That way you only have to install them once.

I went to my local Fastenal store today. They ordered me some rivet nuts. I will take some picture and post updates when I get them installed. They will be here on Wednesday but the tool to install them will not be here until Friday.
