In a way I wish Lechuguilla was open to the public. And in a way I'm glad it's not. I'd love to go in there but judging from Carlsbad Caverns they wouldn't be able to handle the people and their idiocy, writing on the cave walls and leaving trash around.

But even so Carlsbad was cool to visit. Keith, since you'll be around that area you should check out Guadalupe Mountains Nat'l Park. OMG. The Permian Reef geology trail is awesome. A hell of a hike but worth the effort. And of course El Capitan in the sunset... amazing. Even I, a born-and-raised mountain snob from Colorado, was impressed with the Guadalupe Mountains.

USGS has a bench mark at the top of the Permian Reef Trail. It's about 1500' above the visitor's center, IIRC. Like I said, a hell of a hike. I think round trip took 4 1/2 hours.

I thought this was interesting too...the small pools of melt water on top of the falls was bright red. Any idea what would cause that? The area is mainly limestone if that matters.

Thanks for stepping in Keith! I had to actually work. Ewww Who does that, anyway? Obviously I'd rather just post on TW.

Talking to a park ranger I found out the concretions were a result of groundwater moving through the area post-deposition. They aren't all spherical, so I guess it makes sense. The ones I've seen before were a result, apparently, of being rolled around on a seafloor. But then most of the ones I've seen before were golf-ball sized or smaller:

These are primarily phosphate concretions. My professor kept calling them nodules but they're nucleated like a concretion.

But sometimes you see ones even larger than the pics I posted earlier(these ones were from a field trip in southern Oklahoma, specifically the McAlister, OK shale quarry, a couple years ago for a class called Geology of Shales. I promise it's not as boring as it sounds):
These are carbonate concretions, from the same quarry as the phosphate concretions above.
