Can't get key out of ignition

I got my new 1996 4x4 sr5 home today and I stopped, put it in park and shut her down and I could not get the key out. I went for a drive and then back and then tried again and cannot get the key out. I have been driving the truck all weekend with no problems in getting the key out and now it will not turn into the "lock" position to be able to pull the key out. It is a auto trans if that helps and I have made sure it was in park. Any help would be great as I don' t really feel like leaving my truck sitting with the key in it for someone to have a great day in. thanks in advance

 

Look under the dash around the brake pedal and and steering column to see if your foot has not unplugged the interlock switch; it should be a black box. If the steering wheel is locked too, give it a SUPERMAN pull down to reset the lock. Try to park your truck with the wheels in a straight ahead position in the future, too. Oh and if its not a Toyota key but some Hardware store variety, get a TOYOTA key cut (ask me how I know).

 

I looked for the interlock switch but did not see any black box for it to be but I also did look pretty thoroughly and didn't see anything up plugged. The steering wheel is not locked either and the key won' t even turn out of the "ACC" position.

do the first gens have the function where you turn teh key backwards (like your turning the truck off) to go to ACC? if so you may just need to turn it a click foward?

probly already tried that a hundred times haha but oh well worth a try

I read your post but it seems like you were able to get the key out to try your spare were you not? I cannot get the key out so how would I go about even trying a spare if the key is stuck in the ACC position?

 

If the sterring wheel is NOT locked, SUPERMAN PULL (hands at 10 and 11 o'clock) and pull down to lock the column. When you get the key out you better find or have an original TOYOTA key made.

 

Well the steering wheel wouldn't be locked unless the key is in the lock position am I correct. It is stuck in ACC so the wheel should still turn or am I mistaken?

 

Can you start the truck? No? Keep playing with that key. Tap it with a hammer back in then try to turn it. It's hooked up in there. Keep playing with that SOB.

 

i blew the STOP LAMP fuse and i had the same problem, check to see if your breaklights work

I couldn't get my key out.

They ended up taking the whole assembly out, sending it to a locksmith who drilled out the cylinder, rebuilt it and rekeyed it.

 

Thanks for all your help guys!!!! I drove it about 15 mins ago then parked at my house and gave it a real frustrated SLAMMMM into park and a smooth right jab and ... Pop she would turn and come up. I called the previous owner and he said he had problems with it sticking in the ignition like that every once in a while after he put the 1" body lift and that you had to push the shifter towards the passenger seat some. Don't you just love those little quirks to our trucks. Looks to me like the key is pretty warn so I am going to have a new one cut. thanks for all your help guys!

 

Happens to my truck too. Sometimes I have to give my shifter another little click upwards after it's in park to completely disengage the key

 

I just fixed mine with the same problem. There are several interlocks. The one that got me was the shift interlock. I removed the plastic shift cover, then figured out that there is a switch that is triggered when the truck is in park. Only in my case the button you push down to shift wasn't coming back up all the way in park to trigger the switch. I had to file the slot in the shift lever smooth, then re-lube things. After that it works great.

So, things to check:
key is not worn out.
Shift interlock switch.
