Great idea ...thanks for the picture. Did you have to take the windshield wipers off and remove the cowl to gain access?

 

the wire mesh only helps if you clean the mesh regularly. If not, the twigs and leaves just smash up into smaller particles and fall through anyway.
Thanks for the heads up though. One more area to make sure I "rustproof" with my special elixir on my new truck.

You would think that grill would do some good but not it you go by my truck. I'll check out the mesh at the depot. Thanks.

 

No problem I did not remove wipers or anything, I lifted it enough so I could place the mesh.

tommyg29 you are right, but mostly if you leave your truck sitting most of the time and pieces/leaves are small enough, I've found that the mesh will trap the leaves and once you drive the truck air and pressure will make them exit from the back of the hood. Mesh will not stop them all, but for me it stopped most of it and I had a lot since I parked under a tree every day.

btw you can also see and remove anything trapped, from under the truck, where the inner fender ends near the door, I used to have leaves coming out of there lol

 

If you've trimmed your fender flares and liner, this area is open. Makes it a hell of a lot easier to clean.

Edit: Also, I wouldn't worry about rust: That's the first part of the sheetmetal you're gonna cut off when you go to 34/35 inch tires.

The only reason i knew that hole was there is i ran my sirius antenna behind the rubber piece on the passanger side.

Might as well call it the Dog's Ass, after the shit I found there.
Bit of an oversight on Toyota's part.
Where the hell were all the engineers during that design meeting?
They musta come in at the end and engineered the rubber flap access as an afterthought.
