    I have a 2.7 - I always fill the filter and no it doesn't spill out - the filter is screwed on bottoms up - don't know about a 4.0. I think it cuts the time the motor turns over dry. Put the cap on B 4 or oil will spray out over the motor - ask how I know.:rolleyes:

    Not on the v6 -- you can't fill before... it will spill out

    The V6 has the filter upside down. If you fill it, it will dump out when you put it on.

    FWIW - I put some oil in my filter before putting it on. I don't fill it, but there's some in there. Not much spills out, and what does get caught in the lip below the filter and is easily cleaned.

    Guys.
    Our V6 is not like the old days when the filters were more or less holes up.People thought that there would be a supply gap while the engine filled the new filter. Remenber, the motor is not dry. It's parts are still coated residue oil. Our filter being holes more or less holes down is empty every start. Oil the threads & the gasket when you put it on & don't worry about it.

    Isn't there a valve in the filter it self ? What does that do ?

    The "Anti Drainback" valve in the filter prevents most of the oil in the filter from draining back into the crank case.

    I just spent 50 on oil and filter. And now I just realized I forgot the little gasket. 30 miles back to the auto store

    So wouldn't that help prevent dry starts or at least shorten the time required for oil pressure to come up to operating pressure and isn't that the purpose of the anti drain back valve ? Thanks.

    After doing my last oil change and looking at my gasket, I'll be reusing and replacing every other change. IMHO, you should be good reusing the gasket provided there's no apparent damage.

    Ive been doing some "reasearch" on how long the gasket can last before it leaks. Im on oil change 5 with the same gasket.

    Well there ya go ! Naturally having the superior 2.7 I never have to worry as the filter is oriented properly and always full of oil.:D

    Well I kept the gasket. Added Mobil 1 synthetic. To expensive for this college kid!!! What should I go withatll keep me at 20-25$ for oil for 5.1 quarts?
