bone stock save for the block lift that came on it with the open country m/t.
did a fun ride for the local burn centre. Best Dam Ride 2012, did 32 + miles, so needless to say, I'm a little worn out. :bananadead:

This is a Trek 3500, 18 inch frame, I found on craigslist. The lowest the guy will go is $250 on it. Is that a good deal for that? What do they normally go for new?

That's probably fine. Youre not really gonna find anything new for under$500. Disc brakes are probably what I'd hold out for.

    Oh hell ya
If you can't afford the hydraulic ones in the beginning, mechanical (line pull) disc are an excellent upgrade from V brakes, assuming your bike has the proper mounting tabs.
An added bonus is that with the brakes at the center of the wheels, they stay clear of mud (and snow) and debris that can cause loss of braking power and premature rim wear.

Mechanical are just fine. It is a bicycle. Depending on the cable and housing setup, it'd be hard to tell the difference. I have several and they are so smooth you can't tell. I also prefer cable stretch to fluid issues. I can adjust cable stretch on the trail if necessary but bleeding lines and having fluid with ya to deal with that doesn't seem very practical. But it is all tech and expensive and cutting edge and wow though. I wouldn't put mechanical on a 5000.00 bike tho. Everyone doesn't need a 5000.00 bike to go out and have fun with either.

    Yeah.
MSRP is $439 for that bike, most probably sell for $399 new. If it is only a year or two old, $250 sounds fair.

You don't necessarily need disc brakes, especially if you are just starting out. You may not even like the sport, or you might prefer milder gravel trail riding that doesn't require much.

Looks like a good starter bike and budget -- you can probably get $200 for it in a year if you want to upgrade.

Did my first official mtn bike trail yesterday... ended up on a diamond rated trail by accident. I sure got a surprise out of it. Between constantly jumping 10 yr old to full grown trees, to the descents and subsequent climbs out of dry creeks beds. I was wayy out of my ability zone. But i made it through walked one down hill up hill that was atleast 10 ft deep and had to get of my bike to get over a few trees like the one i took a pic of. Then i got past on the trail by a lady. It was a learning experience and lets me know what i need to train towards.

Keep at it Stephen. Before long you'll be passing that same lady and hammering log-overs.

My buddy just got the 4400 model Trek at a grage sale for $130
    garage sale finds FTW

Go look at it and offer $200 and act like your really not interested. With riding season 2012 going on right now, people are selling their old bikes and getting new ones. it should be a good time to buy used right now. (i would think)

Next time you better ride those spots and not walk! :headbang:

    timely thread..

i have been roadbiking for awhile now. took a month off, because of extreme knee pain. (turns out it is fucking GOUT)..in the meantime, i took my old Stumpjumper full suspension out of storage, and looked it over. missing pedal, missing seats. missing brakes..i got some parts and put it back together and tuned it up. WOW! i forgot what a tank a mountain bike is!! slow, lumbering, and unstoppable.

i'll ride it for awhile..but i see a hardtail 29er in my future. looking at IBIS.

I figure this would be a good thread to ask a question, as it seems there are some knowledgable people

I have a 2009 specialized rockhopper comp disk and have bent the front chain rings

I can still ride it, which I do, though I only ride around campus for now. But whenever I drop it into a low gear to get up hills, I pop the chain off the front rings about 80% of the time. it is only when I drop it to the last one or 2 that would make it the easiest.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement for it?

I dont mind going a bit expensive to get a good one, as the bike treats me well and I like it a lot. That and I want it to last a while.

here is a picture of the same bike (sorry, none of mine right now)

(also, when the school year ends, I will be getting it fully tuned by a bike shop (rather than me, I still can't get everything just right).

edit: the chain rings are 42S x 32S x 22S, I would like to stay with the same size. I would be more than willing to replace peddles, cranks, etc... if It will be better parts

I'd probably just replace the bent ring(s) and put a new chain on it. All of the rings are interchangeable and you'd avoid having to (possibly) replace the rear cassette too.
