A street away from the house when we were out last weekend hunting for giant scorpions to have battles with. It was just chilling in the street right after sundown.

Perfect keeper size though. I ended up letting him go a few nights ago because I had gotten rid of all of my reptile stuff when I moved to the evil west side.

In order to determine which sub/species of Hypsiglena this is I need to know where you found it. County, City would be helpful.

Maricopa County, in Peoria. According to my research, it is:
ARIZONA GLOSSY SNAKE Arizona elegans noctivaga. This subspecies is found across most of south-central Arizona. It has a shorter tail relative to body size than the Painted Desert Glossy Snake.
I assume the only way to know for sure is to compare its tail length to the other two.

You're not far from ColtsTRD. He's up on the 101/Shea at the hospital if I'm not mistaken.

You are correct. philipi (Painted Desert Glossy Snake) is up north in or near the Painted Desert and eburnata is found closer to the Colorado River areas.

Cool, thanks for checking. First one I've seen in all my years out here. Usually they're diamondbacks and kingsnakes. I had a wandering garter snake for about 4 years, too. Let it go back where I found it after it got huge. I kept it trained to hunt its own fish from a huge bowl, and it downed 2-3 mice at a time. I think it's fair to say it could fend for itself.

Looks like a gopher snake.. I used to catch them by my house all the time. They look like rattlesnakes and will whip their tail into brush and dead leaves to mimic the sounds of a rattle snake. Great pets, easy to maintain and they are pretty friendly even when caught in the wild.

That was my first guess until I looked it up, but I hadn't ever seen a gopher snake with these markings. This breed does also supposedly shake its tail, too. It was very mellow when I caught it, too, and apparently they rarely bite when held.

While they are similar in appearance, there are distinct differences between the two. Most notably in the scales. Glossys are smooth scaled while Gopher scales are keeled giving it a rough appearance. The patterning is different as well.

    Here is a gopher snake

I'm there for sure. We golf out at Luke AFB that morning, then I'll go home and powder my nose before I come over. What time you thinking of starting?
