Tire issues after Ball Joint replacement

My Goodyear Duratracs that were on the front of my truck until I rotated them this weekend are worn extremely unevenly. It is not just a small amount as it would be if I didn't rotate them like I should, it is in a spiral type pattern that is all over the tire not just on the outer or inner edges. The tires were so uneven that at low speeds, my exhaust rattled. The tire shop said it was my alignment that was causing this. I didn't have this problem until after my lower ball joint broke in October. I am thinking that I got a half ass alignment when I replaced all the ball joints, my right cv axle, and my tie rods in October. Is the tire wear caused by a bad alignment or is there something else? Thanks for any help!

Re-align and have tires balanced. This will eliminate a lot of things.

 

They are choppy. It is kind of like every other knob is worn on both edges...It's really hard to describe. My dad is driving the truck this week. I'm 2 hours away from home at college so I cant take pictures. He is going to get an alignment sometime this week.

 

Sounds like cupping and a bad BJ would do that. Your tires where in essence rattling from side to side and you should of felt it in the steering wheel.

I rotated my Duratracs once in over 30k and mine are fine...the fronts have rounded outer edges from driving thousands of miles aired down on the road (I'm a DB) but thats it.

 

do they kindof feel like saw teeth when u slide ur hand over them? this is due to not roating enough. shity, because u cant really correct it once its been done. just drive it til they wear down and replace. Good year is notorious for using softer rubber. more prone to this happening. i rotate my duratracs every 3k

 

I had them rotated and the ones that were on the back balanced, but the tire shop said that the ones that were on the front were too messed up to even try to balance. He said I should run them on the back and let them smooth out a little more before I balanced them.

 

Nope. My tires are 100% perfect except for the fact I drive on them while having 20psi in them.


lol...3k rotation....I change my oil about every 10k and my tires get rotated at 10-20k. If I rotated as much as you I would do it 7 times a year and I'm way to lazy to do that.

Soft rubber sticks to rocks and such better then hard. I love my Duratracs....just not for mudding and wheeling.

 

Yes they feel like saw teeth when you rub over them. And the two that are chopped up have been on the truck since June of 2011.(I had one tire blow out and bought 2 instead of one) The other two have been on the truck since January 2010. The tire shop said that they were too choppy for it to have been from lack of rotation.

 

I think I am just going to realign it and get new tires when I lift it. (which might be this summer)

You are probably right...I've drove around 12,000 miles without rotating them so that may be a lot of the problem. The older two tires don't have enough tread left on them for me to let them chop up like this so I guess thats why I'm worried.
