    Ha ha! Same here.

The thing is, the lighter you go, the more it costs and when you're talking weight savings, it'd be way better and cheaper to take a pound off you

the chain and rear cassette were replaced pretty recently...before the bends, I wore them out, something like 1000 miles or so. I may end up replacing them at the end of the semester as it will have something like 1100 miles on it by then (i'm at like 900 right now). I dont know if it will need it, but I have been told (please correct me if I am wrong) that every 1000 miles (give or take 200) they should be replaced, I am constantly switching gears on campus too by the way.

2 of them are bent....the big one and the center one, I managed to bend them at different times. The center one has been bent for a while. it isnt very noticeable (same with the large one), but It is causing my chain to pop off which has caused a crash or two

If I keep riding like I do, the smaller one will get bent too sooner or later

    also, what brands are recommended?

I woudl like something that is a bit harder to bend

This is a great idea if your local terrain and fitness allow it. But if your doing a 50 mile epic with a lot of elevation changes then you'll be begging for that granny ring..:D

I had that before...couldn't figure out how I bent the inside rings. Took it in figuring it'd be replaced, the mechanic pulled out a hammer and sent me on my way, no charge. Never did replace it, but road a few more years before replacing the bike.

I figure the lighter the bike, the more doughnuts I can eat, and it all evens out.

I like my granny gear lol

tried it....I cant get leverage on it. I ahve take pliers to it, screw drivers to bend it, a hammer is next, but I think I will have to take it off and I dont want to take it off unless I have a new one

    Yeah.
It will be easiest to stick with the same brand and mode; of cranks and bottom bracket if you can. Things are changing down there fast -- used to be threaded in, now press fit, but yours are probably threaded. The Shimano SLX line is a great value, but probably overkill for this bike. I would suggest checking Pricepoint and JensonUSA for the same thing you've got. Some special tools are needed, though.

Or the hammer thing is a good idea, too. Bike shops near a school campus are usually pretty reasonable, take it by one.

How often you replace the chain rings or rear cogs is more a factor of wear than it is mileage. If your chain is stretched, you'd replace it when the measurement between the links said to. The same is true when the individual teeth on the cogs/rings begin to round over (it will be obvious).

Just remember to keep the chain lubricated, tensioned, and keep the derailleurs properly adjusted. If you do this, the drivetrain should last.

Nishiki's are entry level bikes and you pretty much get what you pay for.

They're sold by sporting good retailers and other 'non-bike' bike shops. If it were me, I'd consider a more reputable local bike shop first.

I brought it to one of the bike shops near campus, told me all he would do was stick a screwdriver or something in it and try to push it back and would have to charge me (very small shop, needs the money, I would have understood if I had got it done). He told me what he would do though, so I bought a new pump instead (attach to bike type).

    also, link to the shimanos?

    here are my chain ring numbers: 42S x 32S x 22S

A better way to put it is mine was wearing out about every 1000 miles, I keep it lubes, etc....I only have trouble dealing with the damn derailleurs, I am still fighting with those adjustments.

I can already see the teeth starting to wear pretty good. they aren't needing replacement yet, but you can definitely tell. I reset the Odometer on my bike each timer after I do that.

oh, and on a side note, I am constantly adjusting my disk brakes.....stupid college campus, too many emergency stops lol, wears down on the brakes really fast.

Good on you for supporting the local guy

    Shimano SLX Crank

OK. Just wanted to make sure you aren't doing any maintenance unnecessarily.
