Has anyone heard of anyone swapping out the running gear (engine, tranny, etc) from a 2nd gen into a 1st gen? Buddy of mine has a smashed up 2nd gen with an apparently still perfectly good engine, tranny, driveshafts and rear axle. I wonder if it's worth holding onto to swap into my 99 when she finally blows.

You will need to measure I'm sure that the 4.0 is bigger than the 3.4 and the engine bay seems pretty tight as it is in the 1st gens

X3 the above! You can do anything. How much cash you want to spend?

We dropped a 4.0 in my friends Desert Race gen. 1 truck a couple years ago. This is a list of some modifications and parts:

    - 4.0 motor and Tranny
    - ECU/ Computer and ALL wiring for the 4.0
-custom made motor mounts (they might have conversion kits now)
    -custom tranny mounts
    -Battery moved to back
-modify engine area for 4.0 clearance & radiator clearance from front core support
-new size DRIVE SHAFT because 4.0 tranny sits in different spot

    -Should I keep going???

-Are you going to run headers?
    -new exhaust
-need aftermarket intake (stock set up takes up a lot of room)
-Is your truck stock or lifted? (the 3.4 is lighter than the 4.0, front might sag)
-so maybe new springs/ or spring rate
    -
**Then you need to pay for a CHP VIN inspection for smog if you plan on driving in the street. You will Automatically FAIL the smog visual with a different motor from stock.
( Im going by california rules)

A tacoma 4.0 is probably about the same exterior size as a 4.8-7.0 chevy v8.

If you're gonna go custom you might as well make it worth it. 3.4 to 4.0 is not worth the effort.

    desert guy,
    1. thanks for the info
    2. disgustingly awesome sig pic.
    3. sounds like quite a project. prob not worth it with my mediocre mechanical skills and shallow pockets, but it is good to hear it's been done and i can only imagine how awesome it would be.
